Disney is a dreamland for children but it can be anything but that for parents. In fact, bed bug problems have been reported in Anaheim’s Disneyland, California and Orlando’s Disney World, Florida. It can be disheartening to find out that your favorite place has become inhabited by these little creatures. Bed bugs are small, worm-like insects that eat human and pet blood. Since the early 1900s, Disney has created magical worlds where almost anything is possible. Since then it has been a place where families could get away and enjoy fun, entertainment, and food together in well-built themed environments. However, one long-standing cloud on the horizon for Disney World and Disneyland was that of bed bugs. When it comes to traveling with family and staying in hotels, there is a certain amount of peace of mind that comes with staying at a Disney hotel. With all their amenities, they are very clearly aimed towards the family market. You probably can’t imagine a Disney advertisement saying: “Two adults, three children, fumigating fire and out of control goblin wandering the streets outside your hotel at night?” But unfortunately, this is how things went down when we were staying at the Disneyland Hotel in California.

A family visiting Disney in Anaheim, CA. has been paying the price after getting an unexpected visitor in their hotel room. Irvan Medina and his family were on vacation at Disneyland with their young daughter when she woke up covered in bed bug bites one morning. “My daughter was scratching a lot,” Medina told CBS Los Angeles. “So what I did was I came to check her out.” What he found were a pair of the little critters on the daybed his daughter had slept on, which led him to call the front desk.

Irvan Medina, a visitor from Puerto Rico, was visiting the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland in Anaheim, when her daughter woke up with bed bug bites.

Bed bugs are not a health risk, but they can be very annoying. According to the CDC, bed bugs are found in all 50 states and have been reported in hotels and motels, apartments and houses, cruise ships and even public transportation. Bed bug bites can cause itching that may last for several days, but they aren’t known to spread any diseases.

Bed bugs don’t mean poor housekeeping or unclean rooms; they’re just tiny insects that feed on human blood while we sleep at night.

The bed bugs were found in a day bed in the girl’s room and were exterminated the same day.

Bed bugs are a common problem in hotels, and they can be found in day beds, night stands, and mattresses. They’re not a health concern; however, bites can cause itching and pain for the person who gets bitten.

If you think you have bed bugs at home or in your hotel room:

• Check your mattress for bug bites and blood spots on sheets or pillowcases.
• If there are any signs of infestation (bites/blood spots), contact an exterminator immediately to have him inspect your home/room for evidence of infestation and treat it accordingly.
