Do Opossums Have Fleas

Ok, let’s try something new (and different). Recently, I’ve had a lot of people asking me if opossums have fleas. It’s unusual to be asked this because it seems so obvious that they do have fleas. So what gives? They are animals and we know that all animals have fleas. I mean cats and dogs have fleas, even the squirrels outside when we walk the dog have fleas (although, they don’t stick around long enough for us to catch them). Have you ever considered whether or not opossums have fleas? If you haven’t, that’s okay. Most people don’t. In fact, it’s completely understandable not to have done even the most cursory of research into whether one of the many marsupials that inhabit Australia is covered in bitey, parasitic insects. By all accounts, no one has ever asked this question before. Except for me (and now you). Fleas are nasty little creatures that plague just about every warm-blooded animal, including humans. Humans get fleas by coming into contact with an existing population of them. Fleas hitch rides on mammals as they move from place to place. Consequently, an opossum that is wandering close to or living in a human environment is going to be exposed to fleas. Fleas seek out opossums for their blood meals for the simple reason that opossums have a higher concentration of red blood cells than most other animals. The opossum (not to be confused with the possum) is a creature of extremes- it has the longest lifespan of any North American mammal, and can survive for a remarkably long time without water. However, its resilience doesn’t stop there! It is also immune to both snakes and urban coyotes, can actually eat most of Philadelphia if it so pleases, and carries a strange but powerful sexually transmitted disease (don’t worry, you can’t get it from them.)

Do Opossums Have Fleas

Do Opossums Have Fleas?

Yes, opossums do have fleas. In fact, they are the only marsupial in the United States that is known to carry fleas. Opossums can carry a variety of different parasites and diseases, but they are most commonly known for carrying fleas.

The problem with opossums and fleas is not just limited to opossums themselves. They can also pose a serious threat to other pets in your home because they are known carriers of many dangerous diseases that can be transmitted through their feces or urine.

If you have opossums in your backyard, they might be bringing fleas with them. That’s right, fleas.

Opossums have a couple of different names that you might hear. They’re also called possums, possom and oposum.

These animals are marsupials and they are native to North America and Australia. They live in the wild and like to eat fruit, vegetables and insects. Opossums don’t have many predators, so they don’t have any natural defenses against them. This means that they need to rely on their instincts to protect themselves from threats such as fleas or ticks.

There are some specific characteristics about opossums that make them unique from other species of animals that you may find around your home or property. They have a very long tongue that helps them grab food from trees without having to climb up there themselves! Some people think this makes them look funny because it looks like their mouth is always open when they’re eating something delicious! The other thing that makes them look different is their tail which has fur on it instead of scales like most other mammals do!
