E O Wilson Ants

The E. O. Wilson ants are a group of species in the genus Paratrechina, which are commonly called “rotten-wood ants”, although the names golden carpenter ants and black carpenter ants are also used in reference to several species of this group. E. O. Wilson has spent a lifetime studying ants, writes as though you and he are having a conversation…. and calls for the human species to adopt social insect-like behavior in order to save the planet.   The first thing you notice when you walk into Edward O. Wilson’s retirement community is the red bucket. It sits at the end of a long row of mailboxes, in front of Apartment 21. I notice it on my second visit to Wilson’s place on this spring day, when I’m here to ask him questions submitted by students reading one of his books, The Social Conquest of Earth, a Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir that doubles as a brainy guide to why humans act the way they do. Wilson grabs the folder from his mailbox and turns toward me with a big grin, as if we’re about to embark on some sort of treasure hunt instead of what it actually is: a tour of his spacious seven-room apartment. Ants have astounded the world with their ability to organize their resources, construction skills and even detect food. These tiny creatures are one of the most influential animals on Earth, alongside bees and mosquitoes. Edward Osborne Wilson was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 10th, 1929. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1950. His academic career was largely spent at Harvard, the University of Texas at Austin, and later the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. where he is a Professor Emeritus of biology.
