El Paso Zoo Cockroaches

The El Paso Zoo cockroach (Periplaneta El Paso County) is not a species of cockroach originating in El Paso county, Texas but rather a variety of the Blattodea order. The zoo has been housing the roaches for ten years, longer than any other zoo in the United States. El Paso Zoo has a new visitor attraction: live cockroaches. These rhinoceros beetles that look like giant cockroaches are indigenous to both El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. Both cities have enjoyed the gentle giants for decades, where they are native and enjoy the same climate. Do you need cockroaches? El Paso Zoo can deliver. While doing a year later at another zoo, I recalled my awe seeing those cockroaches being led out, when I realized how rare these animals were and hasn’t seen them since (there is no zoo in El Paso). This reminded me of his birthday present, which was a live Madagascar hissing roach (Blaptica dubia) that he brought home before the cockroaches incident. I previously wrote that I experimented with keeping geckos and frogs as pets when I was young because of my parents’ philosophy that if something is interesting or dangerous, they would not control it but let me experience it while giving me guidelines to minimize injury. But we agreed to get rid of the roach as a family eventually.
