Home Remedy Bug Repellent

You’ve probably heard over and over how dangerous mosquitos can be. But did you know that they’re not just dangerous to humans? They’re also responsible for killing all kinds of farm animals, including, some say, nearly 1/3 of all of the poultry in the US. Yeah, I had no idea either. That’s why we need to talk about natural bug spray for skin and other home remedies for mosquito repellent. I’m Stephanie and I’m from North Carolina. I am so excited to be on your website! I love all of these DIY (do-it-yourself) projects for home and garden, especially the ones for beauty and skin. Do you have any other projects like the natural repellent for skin? It’s the start of summer and I’ve got a few home remedy bug repellent recipes for you. A lot of people think that store-bought bug sprays are bad for your skin, but many don’t know that there are many homemade alternatives. Have you ever seen a mosquito flying around, heading for your arm and you’re all like, “Naw man..don’t bite me. I don’t like your style. If you got to get it in, it’s cool but just mark my words…you will regret it.” That’s exactly how I feel when insects of any kind enter my house and try to hang out. It doesn’t matter whether they are poisonous or not, they will be the ones leaving with their lives on the line. Therefore, when I set out to find a natural bug repellent that would help keep the bugs out of my space, I was pleasantly surprised with what I found. With summer months approaching, you may want to consider making your own bug repellent rather than purchasing a store-bought variety. How does “make your own homemade bug spray” sound? I know, kind of gross at first. But it’s really not as bad as you might think. The most common reason to make your own bug spray is to avoid putting DEET on areas of skin that come into contact with your child’s skin.

Home Remedy Bug Repellent

Introduction

Summer is coming and it’s no secret that bugs like to come out when the weather gets warmer. One of my biggest pet peeves is getting bug bites while I’m outside enjoying the day or night. Bugs carry bacteria that can really make you sick, so it’s important to protect yourself against them.

My preferred line of defense is a natural home remedy bug spray made with essential oils. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years as a natural healing agent and insect repellent, and they help fight off germs that cause disease in humans. Just a few drops into water with some witch hazel will create an effective bug repellent spray that works wonders!

4oz witch hazel

To make this remedy, you’ll need:

  • 4 oz. witch hazel (distilled)
  • a spray bottle
  • Pour the witch hazel into your spray bottle.
  • Shake well before each use.

10 drops lemongrass essential oil

Lemongrass essential oil is the best choice for people who are sensitive to other oils. Lemongrass has been shown to repel mosquitoes, ticks, and flies effectively. It’s also safe to use on children and pets as well as adults.

8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

To make a bug repellent, add 8 drops of eucalyptus oil to 1 tablespoon of witch hazel. Use a dropper to add the oil to the solution and shake well before applying on exposed skin.

Eucalyptus essential oil contains a compound called eucalyptol that’s both safe for children and pets and is effective at preventing insect bites.

8 drops citronella essential oil

Citronella is a natural essential oil that can repel many insects. It’s a great option to add to your insect repellent, and you can use citronella in many different ways. Here are some examples:

  • Add 8 drops of citronella essential oil to other oils or lotions in a homemade bug spray for outdoor use.
  • Rub 2-4 drops of citronella on the skin as an insect repellent for outdoor use (or indoor use if you’re concerned about bugs). This works well on exposed arms and legs, but be careful not to get it into your eyes because it may sting!

3 drops peppermint essential oil

You can mix 3 drops of peppermint essential oil with a cup of water in a spray bottle and use it as a natural bug repellent. Peppermint oil is also an effective pain reliever and can help you relax. It can be used as a mosquito repellent, but when diluted properly, the peppermint will not irritate the skin.

Mix all ingredients in a 4 oz spray bottle. Spray all over exposed areas to repel insects. Reapply as necessary.

You will need:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil*
  • 20 drops lemongrass essential oil (optional)*

Mix all ingredients in a 4 oz spray bottle. Spray all over exposed areas to repel insects. Reapply as necessary.

You can also use this recipe as an alternative to commercial bug repellent if you have sensitive skin or are worried about the chemicals contained in your preferred brand. Simply substitute witch hazel for the distilled water, and add 15-20 drops of tea tree essential oil instead of lemongrass (or omit altogether if you don’t like tea tree).

One of the best ways to fight bug bites is with a homemade bug repellent.

One of the best ways to fight bug bites is with a homemade bug repellent. There are several reasons why it’s worth considering, including:

  • It’s safer than store-bought options. Many commercial repellents contain DEET or other chemicals that can be harmful if absorbed into your skin. The home remedy version uses no harsh chemicals and is safe for children and adults alike.
  • It’s cheaper than store-bought options. Homemade versions cost just pennies per ounce while leading brands like Off! retail at $9 per 3oz spray bottle—more than ten times as much! Some DIY recipes call for ingredients such as lemon juice or olive oil which are cheap enough that you can make an entire batch for less than what it would cost you to buy one bottle of commercial bug spray in the first place (not even counting any essential oils). This means you’ll have plenty left over for next season, so don’t worry about having to buy more when your supply runs out (unless of course, like all natural products, this repellent loses effectiveness over time).

Conclusion

As summer comes to a close, so does mosquito season. So whether you use one of the home remedies we’ve listed above or another natural solution, make sure to protect yourself from these pesky insects! The last thing you want is to spend a beautiful day outside covered in itchy bites.
