There are many times when you need to reduce the number of horse flies in your area. This is just one of those times, and that is where I come in. There are a few methods that you can use, but some have more effect than others. Some quick and easy methods such as swatting the horse flies away and using repellents seem to work for only a short time before they are back at it and ready to pester horses again. Here is one homemade recipe that I thought might work a little better than the other two methods that I just mentioned. I’ve been promising to write this post for a while now. We here at the Happy Horsetail Ranch have been plagued by horse flies this year. At one point, we had a horse that looked like it had the chicken pox! The bites were everywhere — on ears, legs and eyelids. In fact, one of our horses seemed to be responding badly to the bites, with inflamed limbs and discomfort in his gait. I wasn’t sure if it was due to the bites or something else. So I wanted to find out if fly repellent is safe for horses (and what to make it from if it was). My three mares have a bad habit of rolling and scooting in the mud. This leads to more than one thing including, but not limited to poop smeared legs and rub marks from their bodies on the neck. The fly situation is also a big issue. Laying out hay is an effective stopgap. I tried using sheets, but it was too much work to change them on a daily basis. One day, I noticed the flies didn’t seem to care for the DE that I put around the pastures or my legs covered in it either. So, what was I to do?
