The male follows the female back to her anthill, despite the fact that she’s likely to be armed with a painful sting. Once inside, he’ll attempt to displace any other males already impregnating one of her sisters. These two scenarios are possible ways ants mate when they live in the wild. Adult ants of opposite sex live in the same colony and sometimes care for their young jointly. When an ant of one sex wishes to mate, it leaves the nest looking for a member of the opposite sex. If it finds a member of the opposite sex, mating will sometimes occur on the spot.

The queen ant is the only fertile female in the colony and is responsible for laying eggs. The queen may live up to 15 years.
The male ants have no wings and are used only for mating with the queen. After mating, they die soon afterwards.
