How Do Fleas Jump
The flea is a unique insect that can jump up to 1500 times its own height. To be able to jump this far, the flea must produce energy using its muscles. The energy it creates is then stored in different parts of its body, including the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.
When a flea wants to jump, it releases this stored energy at once, causing it to suddenly stretch out its legs and then propel itself into the air. This process takes less than half a millisecond!
Fleas are very small insects, so they have to use their jumping ability to get around. In fact, most of their day is spent jumping: they spend 80% of their time on the ground and only 20% in flight! Fleas are insects that feed on blood. Since fleas are wingless, they cannot fly and jump to get from one place to another. They do have strong hind legs that allow them to jump over 100 times their own body length.
To jump higher than this, a flea must have something to push against. They can use their claws, but if there is nothing around for them to stand on, then they will not be able to jump very far at all.
