How do fleas mate? Well, now I don’t know how they mate. What I do know is that they have to lay eggs and that those eggs need to get into some warm furry host to develop further. After watching the mating process the female then lays her fertilized eggs either on the host or in a nearby location. Mating for fleas is a very interesting subject. As with most insects that have sexual organs, the male must sterilize the female so that she can carry eggs. It’s a rarity to see one of these mating rituals because they happen so fast – up to 135 times in under 12 hours! It’s not like other animals, because they don’t go into a frenzy when they’re in heat – their length of fertility is only 4-5 days at best. Fleas mate in the same way that most insects reproduce. The female lays her eggs and then the male fertilizes them. Since fleas are parasites they do not require a host to reproduce. They can lay their eggs on any surface and then leave without having to worry about staying near their offspring.
The female flea lays her eggs in batches of up to 50 at a time. These batches will hatch after about 2 weeks, but only if they have access to food sources such as blood or fur. After hatching, these larvae will continue to develop inside the egg casing until they are ready to move on to their next stage in life. This process can take anywhere from 6 weeks up to 2 years depending on how long it takes for them to find food sources in order for them to continue developing into adulthood (and beyond). The mating process for fleas is quite unique.
First, a male flea will select a female flea and begin to follow her around. The male will then start to jump on and off of the female’s back, which is called “drumming.” This drumming will continue for about 30 minutes until one of two things happen: either the female flea stops drumming, or she jumps up in the air and lands on her back. If she lands on her back, this means that she is ready to mate with the male. If she keeps drumming after 30 minutes, this means that she is not ready to mate yet and may try again later in life!
