Let’s start with their anatomy. Fleas have six legs, two antennae (one on each side of their heads), and a pair of large compound eyes (like ours). They also have a mouth parts that help them chew through the skin or fur of their hosts (which includes dogs and cats).

Fleas can’t fly like bees or birds; instead, they jump from host to host when they need to move around. And when they’re not jumping? They rest on top of your pet’s fur! A flea is an insect that feeds on the blood of mammals and birds. Fleas are external parasites, living by hematophagy off of the blood of their hosts. Their bites are painful for both humans and pets. Fleas are vectors for over 30 diseases in mammals, including plague and typhus.

Fleas have a complete metamorphosis with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The first two stages are spent in the environment (outside) while the third stage occurs inside a cocoon made by the larva and the fourth stage occurs outside again as an adult flea (source).

Fleas have four sets of legs used for jumping long distances to find hosts; they also have compound eyes and long antennae which help them sense their environment and locate hosts to bite (source).
