Fleas are a nuisance for both you and your pet. They irritate the skin of your pet causing discomfort and making them scratch incessantly which causes sores. The fleas also pose a risk to the humans in the animal’s environment since they carry tapeworm, canine flu, typhus, paratyphus, echinococcosis, and other diseases. The natural solutions here don’t eliminate fleas on your animals because they don’t kill them but only get rid of the fleas that are already present on your animal. They destroy flea eggs and larva and prevent further infestation by repelling the fleas that would otherwise have come into contact with your pet. Are you tired of fleas being a problem in your house, but not sure what to do about it? Don’t know if the expensive flea treatments are worth their cost or if they can even work? Perhaps you have pets and are concerned about the effects chemicals might have on them. Fleas are a common problem in households with dogs, cats, or other small animals. The presence of fleas can lead to a number of problems, ranging from itching to skin infections. Treating fleas can be frustrating — especially if you are using chemical-based products that could be dangerous to your health and the environment. Fortunately, you can eliminate fleas naturally with a few simple ingredients and some hard work!
How To Kill Fleas Naturally
Vacuum every day.
If you vacuum often and thoroughly, you can prevent fleas from taking up residence in your home. Vacuuming carpets, furniture, floors and all areas where your pet spends time can help to bring fleas out of the carpeting where they hide. After vacuuming, throw away the bag or empty it outside so that no fleas can escape into other areas of the house. Vacuum the pet’s bedding frequently as well as their toys, bed and any area where your animal likes to sleep.
The process of preventing new fleas from entering your home may seem like an uphill battle at first glance but once you get into a routine this task will become easier over time until it becomes second nature!
Bath your pet frequently.
If you have a pet, it’s important to bathe them frequently to reduce the number of fleas in your home. Fleas are attracted to the scent of your pet’s body and will bite them. If they are allowed to feed off their host for long enough, they will lay eggs which hatch into larvae within 24 hours. You may notice these little bugs crawling around if you see one but don’t worry—they won’t live very long outdoors if they fall off your dog or cat onto grass since grass has little nutritional value for fleas.
Use a flea comb on your pet.
- Get a flea comb. Flea combs are readily available in pet stores, and can be used to remove fleas from the fur of pets. They typically have fine teeth that trap fleas and their eggs within them, which can then be disposed of or discarded in the trash.
- Use the flea comb on your pet at least once a week, but not more than once per day. When using a flea comb on your pet’s fur, start at the head and work down toward their tail before going back up again to catch any stragglers (or just keep going back-and-forth like you’re trying to shoo away flies). Don’t forget about their belly!
- Don’t use these tools if your dog is allergic to bites from these parasites—it could cause irritation that makes their allergies worse!
Washing your pet’s bedding regularly.
- Wash your pet’s bedding regularly.
- Use a hot wash cycle and a cold wash cycle to kill fleas.
- Use a pet-specific detergent, such as Flea & Tick Shampoo by Pet Head.
- Use a gentle cycle and low dryer setting (no heat). Dry in the sun if possible, or air dry indoors overnight on low heat (no more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit).
Adding lavender oil to your pet’s bath.
Adding lavender oil to your pet’s bath.
Add a few drops of lavender oil (or rosemary, tea tree, or neem) to the water when you bathe your pets. Don’t use too much, though; too much can irritate their skin and cause an allergic reaction. Do not use these on cats as it can be toxic for them! Also avoid using these oils on pregnant dogs as they may affect fertility and cause miscarriage or stillbirth in some cases.
Sprinkling salt on your carpets and furniture.
Salt is another natural flea repellent that can be used to keep fleas out of your house. Salt is a natural deodorizer, disinfectant, preservative and insecticide. The salt will not kill the fleas but it will prevent the eggs from hatching. Sprinkle salt on carpets, rugs and furniture weekly for 3 weeks in areas where you have seen signs of fleas.
Spraying your carpets with apple cider vinegar diluted in water.
Apple cider vinegar is a natural flea killer. It works by dehydrating the fleas and breaking down the waxy coating on their exoskeletons. This will kill them faster than they can lay eggs.
To spray your carpets and rugs with apple cider vinegar, dilute it 50 percent with water in a spray bottle. Spray directly onto your carpeting and let sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming up any dead insects or larvae that have been killed by this method.
Putting a few drops of eucalyptus oil on your pet’s bedding.
You can put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on your pet’s bedding to help repel fleas. This is a natural treatment that works well for repelling other insects as well, including mosquitoes and ants. It’s safe for pets and humans alike—just be sure not to get any in your pet’s eyes!
