Tiny ants on kitchen counter, in Florida, near a swimming pool — don’t let their size fool you. The queen of this species is no bigger than a grain of rice and begins its life by laying fewer than fifty eggs. From this tiny beginning can arise entire colonies of ants that number in the millions. Once these little ones are established they can do a lot of damage to your home or business. Hate those tiny ants!! I know how you feel. To me, they’re like walking on a bed of hot coals. Every time you step on them, you end up doing a dance for two minutes until you fall down and scream “ouch!” at the top of your lungs. And then the whole fiasco begins again because another one just crawled up your leg. Where did this infestation come from? What is killing these things?! Why are they so tiny and quick and cute but making our lives miserable?! Wiping a counter with a damp paper towel is just one of life’s many tiny tasks. If you don’t know, wiping ants off a counter is another. And you can wipe all day, but they’ll be back the next day. At least that’s how the old saying goes. But who wants to scoop tiny ants into a trash can, let alone use bug spray or pour boiling hot water on them? No one likes hurting these baby-sized bugs. Instead — and this may surprise you — I have a few different tips to kill those pesky ants that are bringing out that magnifying glass for some of us.
How To Kill Tiny Ants
Introduction
No one likes ants in their house. But, unfortunately, there are over 22,000 species of them around the world and only a few hundred of these species live in our homes. The most common type of ant you will find at home is the sugar ant. They come into your house searching for food but end up making nests in hidden areas where they can get access to more food such as sugars, meats, oils and fats.
Non-Toxic Ways to Kill Tiny Ants
You can try a non-toxic approach to killing tiny ants. This is recommended for people who want to avoid using toxic chemicals around their homes, and it works especially well when you have multiple ant species that are invading your home. The key is to make the area around your home less appealing to them, so they’ll move elsewhere instead of staying in your kitchen or bathroom. Here are some things you can do:
- Sprinkle cornmeal around the perimeter of your home and in the kitchen (not near plants). This will help keep tiny ant out because they’re not attracted to cornmeal like other species are; however, larger ants may eat this food source if there isn’t enough available for them elsewhere! Additionally, some people use boric acid or borax powder around the outside foundations – this could also be effective at keeping these little guys away from entering through cracks in walls/floors etc., though again it might attract larger ants too!
- Another option is cinnamon or cayenne pepper sprinkled along with some water every few weeks on top surfaces where food gets stored often enough that there’s always fresh bait being left behind each time something changes hands between family members (e.g., plates). The idea here would be similar but somewhat different than just sprinkling sugar cubes everywhere before bedtime since we don’t want anything else getting caught up in eating all our favourite treats before anyone else has finished theirs off too 🙂
Use Soapy Water
If you know where the ants are coming from, spray them directly with a bottle of soapy water. Be sure to use an unscented dish soap and make sure you are spraying them directly. If they are inside, spray them first then wipe off the dead ants with a paper towel or something similar.
About Soap and Water
Soap and water is one of the most effective ways to kill ants. The soap kills them by dehydrating the insects, causing them to suffocate. It’s safe for pets, children, pregnant women and adults.
Steps for Using Soapy Water to Kill Tiny Ants
- Mix equal parts of water and dish soap in a spray bottle.
- Spray the solution around the ant mound and directly on the ants to kill them.
- Spray along ant trails, as well as any entry points into your home, including cracks in walls and windowsills, around doors or windows that have gaps between them when shut, pipes (such as AC vents) that are close to the ground (or entry points), or other openings where ants might crawl into your home from outside areas like yards or gardens
Steps for Using Baking Soda and Powdered Sugar to Kill Tiny Ants
- Sprinkle a combination of baking soda and powdered sugar on a piece of cardboard.
- Put the cardboard where you see ants walking.
- Dispose of the cardboard once all the ants are gone, as it could attract other insects or animals if left behind.
The baking soda and powdered sugar mixture is non-toxic and safe for pets, so don’t worry about your cat or dog eating it!
Conclusion
If you are still seeing ants after following these tips, you may have a bigger problem on your hands. Call a professional exterminator to inspect and treat the problem before it gets out of hand.
