How To Make A Wasp Trap With A Water Bottle

I hate wasps. So do many people. I know that wasps are usually not looking to hurt us, and for the most part, they don’t actually hurt us. However, that doesn’t prevent us from fearing them and wanting to get rid of them! In my experience, it is a cultural thing! When I briefly lived in Germany they were all over my building. But it turns out that there is no such thing as a German equivalent of an exterminator, and they are completely harmless! I would say that a Wasp Trap is one of the most important things you can have in your tool shed. You may think that I am slightly over-reacting, but hear me out. Even just one wasp can ruin everything in your yard for you and your family. These animals will turn a pot of delicious chili into a puddle of thick and globular mess, even before you can get it on your plate. You may think that these pests are harmless, but you’d be wrong to do so – in fact, the sting of these bugs is known to be one of the worst possible ones to get. So, what do we need to make sure they never come near our home ever again? This quick tutorial shows you how to make a wasp trap with a water bottle! In about 5 minutes’ time, and for under $3, you can make this cheap homemade wasp trap that really works!

How To Make A Wasp Trap With A Water Bottle

Introduction

If you’re like me, you love to garden. Unfortunately, my wasp population has recently exploded. This is a problem because they are getting into my house and stinging me and my family. I saw this awesome tutorial on how to make a wasp trap with an ordinary water bottle, so I wanted to give it a shot.

Find or buy a water bottle.

  • Find or buy a water bottle. You’ll want to use a plastic water bottle, ideally one that was used for holding a beverage and has been washed clean. The reason for this is because it will be more difficult to clean out once you’ve finished assembling your trap, and if you choose to reuse the same container again in the future (which we definitely recommend), bacteria from any previous substances stored in the same bottle could cause problems.
  • A 1-liter (or 1.5-liter) plastic water bottle should work just fine for most people’s needs; just make sure that it has an opening large enough for bees or wasps to enter easily but small enough that they cannot escape once inside!

Cut the bottle in half.

Cut the bottle in half.

Use a sharp knife, such as an X-Acto knife. Make sure you have a cutting mat underneath your bottle so that the glass doesn’t shatter or break into pieces. Hold the bottle securely against the cutting mat and slowly cut through it, making sure not to cut yourself by accident. Clean up any stray pieces of glass that may fall onto your work surface after you’ve made your cuts. The top half of the bottle will be used for your wasp trap, so leave it intact at this point in time!

Attach the top of the bottle (the small piece) to the bottom of the bottle (the big piece) with some duct tape, electrical tape or similar solution.

  • Attach the top of the bottle (the small piece) to the bottom of the bottle (the big piece) with some duct tape, electrical tape or similar solution.
  • Ensure that it is sealed so wasps can’t get out.
  • Make sure that you leave an entrance for wasps to get into your trap. Smaller entrances will be easier for them to enter than larger ones, but this might not help later on when you have more than enough wasps inside!

Mix 1/4 cup sugar and 1 cup of water in a microwaveable container.

The next step is to mix 1/4 cup sugar and 1 cup of water in a microwaveable container. The sugar will attract the wasps, while the water will dilute it so that there’s not too much of a concentrated solution. In essence, this is just like making syrup out of fruit juice: you’re using sugar as your sweetener and water as your liquid base.

The ideal solution should be at least 25% sugar on account that more than that will make it harder for the wasps to consume (and possibly die from).

Put your mixture in the microwave and heat it until it’s boiling.

  • Heat the mixture in the microwave for about one minute. This is to kill any stray wasps that might be flying around still and help them drown a little faster once you release them into the bottle.
  • Take it out of the microwave, but don’t leave it too long or let it boil out of control (not literally), lest you burn yourself or have to wait more than five minutes for your trap to cool down enough to use again.

Put the bottle outside somewhere that you want wasps to stop coming around.

To attract the wasps, you’ll need to put your trap in an area where they are already flying around. Wasps can be attracted by sugary smells, so place it near sugary foods or drinks. They may also come from bright colors, so paint the bottle a bright color if you want to attract them even more.

Once it’s set up and ready to go, wait for some wasps to get inside. Then watch what happens!

This trap will keep your house wasp-free

There are many ways to trap wasps, but this is one of the easiest. All it takes is a couple of supplies and your time. The first step is to get a water bottle that has its cap intact—you’ll use this as a container for your mixture. Next, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil (the kind with little flecks will work best) into the bottle and shake it up until it’s well blended with no clumps left behind. Fill up the rest of the way with water and replace the cap tightly before shoving in place at an angle so that when you’re ready to use it later on, you’ll be able to lift off easily by pulling down on both sides at once without getting any liquid spilled out through any holes while doing so! This should keep them trapped inside long enough for them not only die off but also dry out too since they won’t have access anymore–which means no more pesky buzzing during summer nights when people want nothing more than their own space back from these creatures!
