How To Remove Bed Bug Bites
Introduction
Bed bug bites are like mosquito bites, only worse. They’re itchy, they’re painful, and if you scratch them, they can become infected. Fortunately, there are some simple treatments for getting rid of the pain and itchiness of bed bug bites—and preventing infection from setting in. Here’s our guide to what bed bug bites look like and how to treat them:
A cold compress.
The next step is to reduce the swelling of your bite. Apply a cold compress to the affected area and hold it for at least 15 minutes. Be sure to apply a cold compress as soon as you can after being bitten, as well as any time you feel pain or discomfort over the next few days.
Over-the-counter remedies.
The following over-the-counter remedies are effective at relieving itching and swelling:
- Hydrocortisone cream. This is a topical steroid that can be applied to the bites to reduce inflammation and irritation, as well as itching. Use it sparingly, though, because it can thin your skin if used frequently or in large amounts.
- Calamine lotion. This calamine base has been shown to alleviate itchiness, but it isn’t recommended for children under two years old due to its ingredients (such as salicylic acid). It also may make your skin dry out more than hydrocortisone cream does, so if you’re prone to dryness around the bite areas already then try something else first before using this regularly on your bed bug bites!
- Antihistamines like Benadryl help prevent the effects of a cold from developing into something worse such as an infection by reducing nasal congestion in addition by helping you sleep through the night which can help stop nighttime sneezing attacks too.”
Antihistamines.
Antihistamines are a good option for reducing the itching associated with bed bug bites. Some people have an allergic reaction to bed bug bites and must take antihistamines on a regular basis. If you’ve been bitten by bedbugs and are experiencing itching, you should see your doctor to see if it is necessary to start taking antihistamines regularly.
However, some antihistamines can make you drowsy or nauseous; so be aware of this when considering using them as treatment options for your infestation symptoms.
Soap and water.
Soap and water is a good way to clean the area. It’s important to understand how to properly clean this area, as you may be too sensitive or embarrassed to do so. Always wash the area first with soap and warm water, then pat dry with a towel. Do not rub! If possible, use an antiseptic cleanser instead of just regular soap and water. Rinse off any remaining residue thoroughly after washing each time before applying more lotion or ointment. Do not use pajamas that expose your skin; if needed, wear loose-fitting clothing such as gauze bandages until your bites heal completely or for at least three days following treatment (that is when most people begin to show signs of improvement).
Aloe vera.
Aloe vera is a natural remedy that can be used to treat bed bug bites. The plant’s compounds are known to reduce inflammation, which means they can relieve pain and swelling. It also has antibacterial properties that may help kill any bacteria on your skin, such as MRSA and staphylococcus aureus, which are common causes of infection in bed bug bites.
The best way to apply aloe vera is straight from the plant itself: simply slice open one of its leaves with a knife or scissors and rub the clear gel directly onto the bite site until it’s been absorbed into your skin. You should leave this on for at least 30 minutes before washing it off with warm water (you should avoid using soap).
Coconut oil.
Pat dry the area with a clean towel and then apply a thin layer of coconut oil to the spot. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, then wash it off with soap and water. Repeat this process several times throughout the day until your bite stops itching and healing.
If you’re worried about bed bugs biting you in your sleep, apply coconut oil directly to your skin before going to bed (and use it every night). The oil will form an unpleasant barrier that keeps them from biting you while also relieving any itchiness from previous bites or rashes they caused while they were feeding on your blood!
Dab it with white vinegar.
- Dab it with white vinegar. If you have bed bug bites, the itching and swelling can be overwhelming. To help relieve some of that discomfort, dab a cotton ball soaked in white vinegar onto each bite. The acidity in the vinegar will help prevent infection as well as dry out a severely swollen bite, reducing its size and intensity.
- Treating your skin with hydrocortisone cream may also help reduce swelling and pain associated with bed bug bites. Apply a generous amount of hydrocortisone cream to each bite once or twice daily until they are gone (and while they’re healing).
Avoid scratching, at least during the day.
When you’re itching to scratch, try not to. Your body may be giving you a signal that something needs immediate attention, but scratching can cause more damage than the original bite or bug itself. Scratching can lead to infection and scarring that can last for years. It’s also possible for some types of bedbug bites to leave permanent discoloration if scratched improperly while healing. So keep your hands off unless it’s a dire emergency!
You can keep bed bug bites from getting infected or worse by following the advice above
You can help prevent bed bug bites from becoming infected or worse by keeping the area clean, avoiding scratching and applying anti-itch creams and medications.
Be sure to wash your hands after handling any items that may have come in contact with bedbugs (bedding, clothes etc).
Avoid rubbing the affected area of your skin as this can cause further irritation. This includes using alcohol on the affected area because it will only make matters worse. Avoid using anti-itch creams and medications for several days since these products often contain a drying agent that could further irritate your skin after bites are present. Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprophen unless directed by a doctor due to their potential side effects which include gastrointestinal bleeding in rare cases. It is also important not to scratch at any welt so as not to break its surface allowing bacteria underneath access into your body via open wounds created by scratching; this increases risk factor for infection especially if scratched areas are near mucous membranes such as around mouth or eyes.”
