Ikea is a Swedish organization which was founded in 1943. The name IKEA is an abbreviation of the company’s original name, Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. The first store was opened in Sweden in 1958. Today, Ikea has 566 shops in 28 countries and one online shop. At the end of 2013, there were 91 shops in China, 71 in Germany and 69 in the United States. Ikea is the largest furniture retailer in the world by number of stores, with over 300 locations in 48 countries. The history of Ikea is as interesting — and quirky — as its 2017 Super Bowl ad.

A University of Alberta graduate student went to IKEA over the weekend to look at some furniture, but instead found herself staring directly at what looked like a bedbug on a pillow.

“I stepped on some mattresses and checked everything and I just noticed that there’s a bug crawling on one of the pillows, so I just took a picture and notified the staff nearby,” Hongyi Gong said in an interview with StarMetro on Tuesday.

She quickly went to the washroom to wash off, but said she was pleased at how quickly IKEA staff responded and dealt with the situation.

IKEA Canada sent a statement to StarMetro calling the incident isolated and that a third-party pest control party was contacted to immediately begin an investigation.

“The product in question was also immediately removed from the floor,” the statement read. “The results of our initial investigation found no evidence of bedbugs on the product or within the area. We then had a second investigation method performed via K9 detection, which also determined no trace of bedbugs in any place mattresses are sold in the store.”

Tom Schultz, owner of Edmonton Exterminators Ltd. and a 40-year veteran in pest control, said it’s extremely rare to find bedbugs in a commercial space like IKEA. (His company did not particpate in the investigation of the store.)

“They were probably brought in by a patron on something they were carrying, and, normally, in a case like that, it would just be monitoring to start with,” he said. He also added that he wouldn’t at all be concerned about shopping at IKEA after this incident since a commercial space doesn’t provide a good home for the bugs, which need a constant supply of food from humans.

However, cases of travelling bedbugs have caused him to be somewhat mystified in recent years, he said.
