Insecticide For Red Pumpkin Beetle
Background
Management
- Always keep the field clean
- Sow early so that the plant passes the cotyledon stage by the time the beetles become active
- Seedlings can be saved by covering with a mosquito net
- Apply dry ash to the plants.
- Keep the field free of alternate host weeds, such as other cucurbits
- Collect adult insects from the infested leaves and kill them
- Deep ploughing of soil is recommended to expose the soil borne pests and hibernating stage of defoliators during the summer
- Using neem oil cake in the soil has been reported to kill the pest larvae
- The pest can be killed by spraying fenitrothion (e.g. Sumithion) or malathion 50EC @ 500 ml/hectare. The treatment should be applied as soon as the pest appears and repeated at 15 days interval.
Insecticide For Red Pumpkin Beetle
Red pumpkin beetle is a pest that attacks pumpkins, squash, cucumbers and melons. The beetles feed on the leaves of these plants and can cause significant damage to a crop. They are red or orange in color with black spots. The red pumpkin beetle is about one-quarter inch long when fully grown and has a black head and legs. The larvae are yellowish-white and have black heads.
Insecticides for red pumpkin beetles include carbaryl, acephate and malathion. Carbaryl is a carbamate insecticide that can be applied to the soil around plants or sprayed directly onto them. Acephate is an organophosphate insecticide that works by paralyzing the nervous system of insects; it should be applied only when temperatures are above 50 degrees Fahrenheit because it breaks down in cold weather. Malathion is a mixture of two chemicals: malathion itself (an organophosphate) and pyrethrins (an organic compound made from chrysanthemum flowers).
