Insects That Jump Like Fleas

It’s true, a lot of insects can jump, but there are a few that truly remind me of fleas. These jumping insects have characteristics that make them unique and a bit quirky. Fleas are wingless, blood-sucking insects commonly found on cats and dogs. Their bodies are compressed laterally giving them the ability to jump great distances with the help of powerful hind legs. Their abdomens have hooks which allows them to latch onto their host. Many male fleas don’t even have wings so they just hop around looking for a mate, who may be much larger than them.

Insects That Jump Like Fleas

Pursuing yet another bloodsucking flea as it hops off of your dog and into your carpet, you curse the creature and its darned jumping ability. Well, as any self-respecting grasshopper can tell you, fleas aren’t the only insects or bugs that can hop. From fleas and springtails to grasshoppers and katydids, there are a number of insects that use jumping to either pursue their prey or escape becoming prey, themselves.

Flea Beetles

So named because of their jumping ability, not for any sort of penchant for pooches, flea beetles are small beetles that jump when disturbed. Known for the damage they can do to vegetable crops, flea beetles tend to eat holes right through leaves in the manner of a caterpillar, leaving a hole that appears to have been made by very fine buckshot. Unlike actual fleas, flea beetles can fly and do so in order to find the plants that are most to their taste. Some varieties of flea beetle prefer cabbage, and others prefer tomatoes or potatoes.

Springtails

While some entomologists consider springtails to be separate from insects, instead designating them a modern hexapod, but they certainly meet the criteria of “bugs.” Although they do not damage homes, springtails are often found in newly built homes because they are attracted to damp building materials and wet plaster. Springtails are tiny in size, ranging from 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, and are so named because they “spring” or jump away from any disturbance by snapping their tail against the ground. Springtails need a moist environment to survive, so if you don’t want these pint-sized pests in your home, keep things nice and dry.

Grasshoppers and Crickets

Both from the insect order Orthoptera, grasshoppers and crickets are marked by their long, powerful back legs that they use to propel themselves far (relatively speaking) into the air. While they are very similar in appearance, crickets tend to have much longer antennae than their grasshopper cousins. A notable fact about insects from the order Orthoptera is that all of them “sing” by rubbing parts of their bodies together, an action referred to as stridulation.

Freaky Froghoppers

While all varieties of bug and insect that hop clear impressive distances, none are quite so impressive as those achieved by the froghopper. The froghopper bug, a sap-sucker known for coating plants with foamy spittle, was crowned the “World’s Greatest Leaper” by National Geographic in 2003. Froghoppers themselves measure a mere 1/5 inch (about 6 millimeters) long, but can leap a whopping 28 inches (70 centimeters). That’s 140 times their body length — for the sake of reference, imagine a human long-jump record of 840 feet. The secret to the jumping, says neurobiologist Malcolm Burrows, is a specialized catapult mechanism that relies on a system of storing, then releasing energy.

List of Jumping Insects

Some people might wish that insects were more sedentary. The truth is, many of these little guys are pretty active, are faster than expected and even jump! Click beetles, grasshoppers and fleas can hop out of harm’s way or to a new host, but the list of jumping insects doesn’t stop there. Here are some of the most common.

The Click Beetle’s Buggy Backbend

A click beetle is agile enough to jump without using its legs. When it’s upside down, it’s too unbalanced to roll over onto short, little legs. Instead, the bug arches its back, bending the middle of its body upward so that its front and back ends touch the ground – like a backbend. Then it suddenly straightens out, making a loud click sound and spinning into the air to land right-side up. A click beetle about half an inch long can catapult through the air about a foot.

Grasshoppers’ Great Leaps

The grasshopper is clearly named for its most remarkable skill. Its back legs have strong, oversized muscles for launching into impressive leaps. Technically, the insect’s muscle-bound femurs can straighten with sufficient force to shove their tibiae against the ground hard enough to propel themselves upward and forward. The grasshopper prepares for the move like an Olympic contender, swaying slightly back and forth while it gauges the jump and gears up. Leaving predators behind or landing perfectly on a new perch is a breeze for these bugs.

Flea Feats

You’ll see fleas jump when the refuge of a dog’s fur gets too crowded, or when something unpleasant happens, like the dog running through a sprinkler. Fleas jump in the same manner as grasshoppers. They have modified back legs specially designed for thrusting. If they’re scared, threatened or merely want the quickest route to a fresh meal, they leap. Fleas sense vibrations from potential hosts, and that tells them where to jump. They can propel themselves 200 times the length of their tiny bodies. If you could do that, you’d be able to leap 70-foot-tall buildings in a single bound.

Other Jumping Insects

The list of jumping insects is practically endless: crickets, katydids, froghoppers (or spittlebugs), brownbanded cockroaches, flea beetles, praying mantises, locusts, springtails, leafhoppers, bedbugs and more.

Some believe that walking sticks can jump, but what they really do is fall from their perches when threatened, then use their wings as a parachute to float to safety.

Although they’re not technically insects, but arachnids, about 5,000 species of Salticidae spiders are accomplished acrobats that certainly do jump. They sometimes spin threads of silk as they sail through the air to catch prey. The thread acts as a lifeline in case they need to scramble back up. Pretty clever, salties.

Insects That Jump Like Fleas

Insects that jump like fleas are a group of insects that have adapted the same jumping ability as fleas. The name comes from their similarities to fleas, but they are not actually related to fleas at all.

The main differences between flea-like jumping insects and their actual counterparts is that flea-like jumping insects are larger in size and do not bite or suck blood from other animals. Instead, they use their large legs to jump long distances in order to escape predators or find food.

The texture of these insects varies depending on the species; some have soft bodies while others have hard exoskeletons. They can be found worldwide in damp areas such as forests and grasslands.
