Is Killing Ants A Sin
From an Islamic perspective killing harmful insects is permissible, even recommended, to avoid the harm they do. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared it permissible to kill such insects even in Al-Haram (the Holy Mosque) of Makkah where hunting is originally impermissible.
The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘There are five pests that may be killed whether one is in ihram (state of consecration) or not: rats, scorpions, crows, kites [a hawk-like bird], and mad dogs.’ (Reported by Muslim). Thus the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told us that they are harmful pests, and that they are unlike other animals which do not do harm, and so he told us to kill them whether we are in ihram or not. If other creatures such as ants, cockroaches or dung-beetles cause harm, they may also be killed with insecticides or other means.
Thus, it is recommended to kill every harmful insects and crawling thing [the Arabic word hasharat includes both insects and arachnids], like scorpions, lice, mosquitoes, or fleas.
Even harmless insects which are the ones that do not cause serious diseases, If they negatively affect your life or households by damaging the property or causing chaos, hurting children let alone the uncleanliness caused by their existence in the house, it is then permissible to kill them.
Is it wise to kill an insect just because it is wandering around your apartment or just because it is bothering you?
I’ve seen people killing small insects just because it is wandering/jumping/hiding in apartments. I always wonder why people kill an insect if it is not harmful. They can just carefully take them away or show them some other path.
People kill insects for two reasons 1) they might bite them or 2) they might spread disease.
But an insect isn’t aware of that. It doesn’t know whether its presence will create the disease in the human race.
I googled “dangerous insects” and at the top I got web page titling “25 Most Dangerous Bugs In The World”. Below is an excerpt from the article.
Termites: While they are not dangerous in the typical sense of the word as they play a critical role in the environment and even in some culture’s diets, they have the potential to cause major damage to crops and infrastructure.
Fine, they have the potential to damage our crops and infrastructure, but is it their fault? They are just trying to survive. Is it wise to kill an insect in such situations?
Is Killing Ants A Sin
Killing ants is a sin. It’s a fact that we all know, but it’s also true that many of us don’t live by. Ants are just as much a part of nature as the trees they infest and the birds they eat. They are living creatures with their own lives, just like you and me. They deserve respect, just like any other living thing on this planet.
It is not a sin to kill ants if they are attacking your home or if they are causing damage to it or your property. For example, if ants are eating away at your house or chewing through wires in your walls, then yes, killing them would be justified because it would be necessary to save yourself from further damage or loss. But if you’re killing ants just because they’re there and it’s fun (like when kids do), then you should stop immediately!
