Jiggers Sand Fleas

Jiggers are a group of tiny animals belonging to the small invertebrate class Collembola. Jiggers sand fleas are named after their ability to “jiggle” in a way that makes them seem larger than they actually are.

I’d like to share a story about these pesky sand fleas who have found their way into my life. But first, I have to give you some backstory on sand fleas. Sand fleas are more commonly known as Jiggers. They can only be found in the South, particularly in Florida, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi. If you’re not familiar with them, here’s a little bit of info about them.

If you’ve been following our blog, you know that we transitioned last year from living aboard a cruising sailboat to taking off into the world full-time in a Jeep Wrangler. One of my favorite things about being on the road is being surrounded by nature — more specifically by places where salt meets fresh water. While Galveston Bay was one of my favorite places in Texas (and actually where I proposed to John), it’s not exactly teeming with wildlife, especially when we were living aboard Windfall. Larger creatures like shrimp and crabs could be seen occasionally around the boat but it wasn’t until we got out on foot that I saw things like these:
