Large Texas Ants

Large Texas Ants on a Blog by Meg Hawkins

I live in Texas where this ant is. I recently discovered they are called the large Texas ant. Texas is the only state where you will find it, so there’s nothing to worry about this species moving in with you. They eat seed-bearing plants, which is great because I have a back yard garden. I live in a rural area, which also helps because now days everyone sprays for ants.

The large Texas ant ( TAMAOIPROPROPA1, or Linepithema humile) has been known to range from southeastern U.S. to Uruguay and Argentina. Its name comes from reports that it was discovered first in Texas. However, this ant was originally described by Santschi in 1916 as Formica humilis, not Tamaoipropropra1. It is the second most common ant throughout the southern U.S., with expansion into areas where its population is low and sparsely organized with little to no interaction with other colonies. Although it is considered an invasive species, it does not dominate and take over other natural ecosystems as a whole but settles in only pockets where resources are sufficient for its nesting needs.

Huh? What’s a Texas Ant you ask? Well, they are monsters as big as your hand. Their heads/faces are proportionally sized to their body compared to other ants. If a regular ant is standing next to a Texas ant, the Texas ant is the one that looks huge.
