Lemon ants are a species that lives in the Atlantic Guyanas. This species is known by many other names including: Citronella Ant, Lemon Dory Ant and Lemon Pavement Ants. The main reason for the latter name is because this species prefers to establish its colonies in areas with strong contrasts. These include contrasting spaces, as well as buildings and roads. They frequently share their living space with other ant colonies, but they always remain protective of their nests (Lemon ANTS).
Today my family and I went to a lemon ant farm. I had never heard of a lemon ant before so I was eager to learn. These ants weren’t like the ants you see in your back yard. Lemon ants are special because they live in the hardiest conditions found on earth: at high altitude due to lack of oxygen, and in extremely cold temperatures much lower than that of an ordinary ant. I couldn’t help but think about how these ants might be able to teach me something about my own life even though they’re very different from me.
All I can think of when it comes to lemon ants is their foul lemon scent. I’m talking about the actual ant and not the actual scent… that would be a little weird, don’t you think? The lemon ant also goes by another name — Dorymyrmex bicolor. And if you’re wondering what a Dorymyrmex is then I’m going to have to disappoint you as I have no idea what it is either.
