So what is bed bugs? These are small parasitic insects that feed on blood of mammals or birds. They are flat and oval shaped, and can be brown, golden or reddish depending on the life stages. Female bed bugs lay eggs in concealed areas such as cracks or crevices. These eggs hatch into nymphs which are small, translucent and undeveloped replicas of adults. Bed bug nymphs go through five instars where each instar is a developmental period separated by molting (shedding their outer shells). Nymphs reach maturity after undergoing about five molts which takes several months before the female bed bug reaches adult stage. The entire cycle from egg to adult takes about one year to complete but may vary with temperatures. Lifespan of female bed bug without food is only few months but when continuously fed can live up to 1 year or more.
Did you know that bed bugs can live for up to a year without feeding? Did you know that eggs can survive temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit? Did you know that adults average between 4mm and 7mm in size, with females growing slightly larger than males? The bed bug life cycle is a very interesting one.
It starts off with the female bed bug laying eggs on or near a host. The eggs are then usually laid in cracks, crevices and seams of mattresses, box springs, headboards and furniture.
The eggs hatch into nymphs which look like tiny adults but don’t have wings. The nymphs will also feed on the blood of its host until they reach maturity at about six weeks old. Once they reach maturity, they will lay their own eggs to continue the cycle.
The life cycle of a bed bug is a unique process that begins with an egg, which hatches into a nymph, who becomes an adult. This process can take up to three months and involves several different stages.
The first stage for a bed bug is as an egg. The female lays eggs around the home, typically in cracks and crevices. These eggs are white and round, and they are about 1mm in diameter. It’s possible for the female to lay up to five eggs per day, and she will continue to lay them until she has about 150 eggs total. The eggs hatch within 10 days, turning into nymphs.
The nymphs look like smaller versions of adults and are red-brown in color. They are mobile but cannot feed on their own yet; they need food from another source such as human blood or animal blood (typically pets). After molting into an adult bed bug, they will begin feeding immediately on human blood or animal blood in order to survive until they reach maturity within another two weeks (assuming no additional molts occur).
Designing a product is like raising a child. You have to love it, nurture it, and give it the right tools to grow into a successful adult.
