Little Black Cockroaches

When you step out of your car, you focus your eyes on the horizon by lifting your head up. As you step out, though, you slam your forehead into something. It is a little black cockroach! It’s only about two inches long and looks like something people from an alien planet would use to scare children. You groggily extract yourself from the car and take a few tired steps towards the house.  But then — splat! Another one hits you right on the back of the neck. These things are like guided missiles.

I don’t usually do a lot of poetry. It doesn’t come easy for me, so I don’t often share my poems with anyone. The exception would be my girlfriend. My girlfriend is the one who gave me the idea for this one, which is also why it’s a little different from my others. The original title: Little Black Cockroaches . This was supposed to be about all the problems in our relationship. But I changed it, because it was too negative sounding, and thought I could make it work better if I changed it to something positive.

Little black cockroaches love dirty, dark places. And so do I. I am a bug, one of the millions I’m sure that make you shudder when you catch a glimpse of them.

I was having breakfast this morning, when something strange happened. I felt something crawling on my leg! I had to look down, only to find a little black roach walking across my thigh towards the edge of my bed. It was one of those small ones, and I could have probably brushed him off, but he was just so slow and fat and gross that I couldn’t help it. Basically as soon as I noticed him, I squashed him with my hand until he stopped moving.
