If a family member had an unwanted pest infestation problem or was experiencing a bug dilemma, I would be the person they would call. I’ve been trapped in my own house twice by red ants. The first time I just dumped vinegar into every access point until they finally left and returned to their colony somewhere deep into the woods behind my cottage. The second time, was quite unsettling and terrifying: I woke up in the middle of the night to two little tiny ants crawling on my left arm, I could feel them crawling below disturbing my skin as well. They were bloodsucking ants moving around on my bed and I couldn’t wipe them off my arm because they wouldn’t let go! These two little tiny ants in house crawled onto me from under the pillow, at which point I became super scared and began frantically rubbing my arms to try and get rid of them. They weren’t normal ants, it wasn’t like other times when I saw one and it scurried away usually through the cracks on a door jam or out of sight. If you’re seeing little tiny ants with wings, don’t panic. These aren’t your normal everyday ants. They have wings!

These are called “flying ants” and they’re actually a type of ant that’s in the same family as the fire ant. They make these little flying critters to help them get around quicker and more efficiently, but they’re harmless. The only way you could get bitten by one is if it landed on you, but even then it would be pretty unlikely because they’re so small (about 1/8th of an inch).

You might see them in the summertime especially if there’s been a lot of rain lately because they like to hang out in moist areas like mulch beds or under logs. They’ll also come out at night when it’s cooler so it might help if you check outside after dark just to be sure. If you don’t have any mulch beds or logs around then I wouldn’t worry too much about them because they don’t do much damage anyway–they just eat plants and other bugs that live in mulch beds or under logs so they won’t hurt your house either!
