Matabele Ants are pretty interesting insects. They are named after the Matabele tribe in Zimbabwe and they are one of the largest ants in the world.
Have you heard of the Matabele Ants? They are extremely powerful swarmers and one of the African Continent’s most feared ants. The name for people from the Matebele tribe, who live in Zimbabwe. Thus, the name matabele ants came from there.
The Matabele ant is huge. If you do any kind of yard work and happen to come across a mound, don’t get too close. They may not seem like much at first but their bite is something else.
The matabele ant, alternatively known as the giant or driver ant, is an arboreal ant of the genus Dorylus and family formicidae. It is a large species of army ant found in central and southern Africa. The name “matabele ant” derives from people (Matabili) who were displaced when their lands were taken over by Shona speaking people. The shona word “Matabele” derived from the Nguni word “m’thabele”, which literally means “ancient home”.
Scientists have identified a species of army ant—named the Matabele ant due to its tendency to raid villages–that does not stop for food or water on its way to raid other ant colonies. The ants, which belong in the Dorylinae subfamily of tribe Leptanillini, are native only to Africa and primarily inhabit savannah climates. The ants can breed from only two queens, who can live up to 30 years each. The Matabele ant is among one of the leggiest animals in existence and has four pairs of legs per body segment (as opposed to three pairs per segment averaging across all animal species).
