Cats are wonderful pets for many reasons, especially for their high standards of cleanliness. Unfortunately, this can make them particularly vulnerable to fleas infestations. While a flea-infested cat can be a difficult creature to live with, there are a number of home remedies for fleas on kittens under 12 weeks that can make the process of removing these insects much easier (and yes, simpler than downing the poor dear with toxic chemicals!). Fleas on cats are a big problem. It can be hard to know where to start treating for such a problem. Here’s some natural remedies and home remedies that will help you get rid of fleas, keep them away, and treat the bugs.
Natural Remedies For Cats With Fleas
Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring, soft sedimentary rock made up of the skeletal remains of diatoms. It’s also known as kieselgur or kieserite, and it’s been used for a variety of purposes since the time of ancient Greece. Today, diatomaceous earth is most widely used as an insecticide for the control of fleas on pets and other animals.
Diatomaceous earth works by dehydrating insects when they breathe in the fine powder that coats their bodies. Generally speaking, if you’re going to use any kind of natural remedy for your cat with fleas (or any other animal), you need to check with your veterinarian first before proceeding; there may be specific warnings about certain ailments or allergies that might require you to take additional precautions when using these types of products.
If you do decide diatomaceous earth is right for your pet, here are some steps you’ll need to follow:
Apple Cider Vinegar
You can use apple cider vinegar as a spray on your cat. It will help to repel and kill fleas, but it’s also a natural remedy for many other cat health conditions. Apple cider vinegar is an antibacterial and antifungal agent that might help control the growth of bacteria and yeast found in your pet’s fur, which causes itching. This type of vinegar is good for repelling fleas because it helps to slow down their growth cycle by killing adult fleas before they lay eggs.
Although there are some disadvantages to using apple cider vinegar—it may cause skin irritation if not diluted properly, and it may be difficult to get your kitty used to the smell—the benefits outweigh these minor drawbacks. You should start by diluting one part ACV with two parts water before spraying it onto your feline friend’s body after every bath or when she’s wet from playing outside or swimming in the pool (or both).
Garlic Powder
You can give 1/8 – 1/4 of a teaspoon of garlic powder to your cat daily. You can mix it with their food or sprinkle it on their wet food. You can also rub it on the skin, but be careful not to get any in the fur.
Garlic is also effective when used externally for fleas and ticks; you can rub garlic oil directly onto your cat’s skin and fur, but be sure not to get any in their eyes or mouth.
Be sure that you’re using garlic that is safe for cats; some types are toxic and may cause anemia in your pet!
Lemons
Lemons are a safe and effective way to treat fleas on your cat. They can be used when a cat is suffering from a flea infestation, or as an effective deterrent against future infestations. Lemons are also an effective treatment for flea bites and bedding that has been contaminated with fleas.
To begin the treatment process, wash off any visible dirt from your cat’s fur. If you have any shampoo or soap left over from washing your hands or face, this should do the trick! Once the fur is cleaned and dry, cut open half of a lemon (or more if needed). Squeeze some juice onto the fur of their back(s), head(s), tail(s), legs(s) … really anywhere there’s skin showing under their coat — just not too much! The point here isn’t simply to apply lemon juice; we want our cats’ bodies to absorb it through their skin so they can reap all those wonderful benefits we discussed earlier in this section (and then some).
Patchouli Essential Oil
Patchouli essential oil is a natural insect repellent that can be used to treat your cat’s flea problem. The oil has a strong, earthy smell and is generally well tolerated by cats, though you should always test it on a small area first. It’s also very effective at keeping fleas away, so long as you apply it regularly. If you’re interested in using patchouli oil for this purpose, here are some tips:
- You can purchase pure patchouli essential oil at most health food stores or online.
- Apply the oil directly onto your cat’s fur once per week (or daily if needed). Make sure to rub it into the skin between their shoulder blades as well—that way it spreads over their entire body and doesn’t just stay on top of the fur!
- To make your own batch of homemade flea repellent spray that doubles as an insecticide for houseplants and furniture sprays, simply add 20 drops of patchouli essential oil along with 20 drops each lavender and lemon eucalyptus oils into 1oz witch hazel base (or use vinegar instead).
