Ticks are dangerous parasites that can spread disease. They are a danger in the world and it’s important you know how to deter ticks from biting humans. When you know how to get rid of ticks and where they like to hide, you can protect yourself and your family from them.  Ticks are notorious for spreading disease. Even though you may not find it enjoyable, it’s important to remember that ticks play a beneficial role in the ecosystem. However, this doesn’t make them any less dangerous to humans and pets. If you’re trying to keep ticks off your dog and family, there are a few options for tick repellents you can use.

Natural Repellent For Ticks On Humans

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil is toxic to cats, dogs and humans. It can also cause serious harm to horses and cattle.

Lavender

You can also use lavender as a bug repellent. Lavender essential oil is toxic to cats, so if you have one in your house, be sure to keep your lavender extractions and sprays away from them.

Lavender is safe for humans and dogs (though it might cause skin irritation on pets), but it should be used sparingly by pregnant women because it can cause contractions of the uterus. It’s also not recommended for people with epilepsy or high blood pressure.

You can buy lavender oil at any store that sells essential oils; however, if you’re interested in making your own homemade insect repellent spray or ointment, here are some helpful tips:

Rosemary and Sage

The two herbs that are most effective at repelling ticks are rosemary or sage. Both herbs are natural flea and fly repellents, but they also work to repel ticks because of the strong smell their oils release when you crush them.

They can be applied directly to your skin by rubbing it on there with your hands, or you can make a diluted tincture by soaking either herb in alcohol for several weeks before straining out the buds and leaves (or just buy pre-made tinctures). This method is more controlled than just rubbing fresh rosemary or sage onto your skin, since you know exactly what’s going on with every drop of oil being applied.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a perennial herb from the mint family that has a gentle citrus flavor and aromatics, and it’s safe for humans and pets. This herb is a powerful antibacterial agent that can be used to repel ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. The best part? Lemon balm doesn’t have to be applied directly to skin; instead, you can add it as an ingredient in homemade insect repellent spray or lotion recipes!

• 1 cup distilled water
• 10 drops lemon essential oil (about 5 ml)
• 3 tablespoons sweet almond oil

Vanilla

Vanilla oil is a natural tick repellent and an effective alternative to commercial bug sprays. It can be mixed with citronella oil to make a spray that will repel ticks, mosquitos and other insects.

Vanilla-based tick repellent is safe for humans, dogs and other animals. Its effectiveness has been proven by scientific studies in France and the US which show that vanilla oil has anti-tick properties without any harmful effects on humans or animals.

Cinnamon Oil

Cinnamon oil is toxic to cats, so if you’re worried about your cat getting into it, transfer the diluted cinnamon oil into a spray bottle and apply to their collar instead. The oil will help repel fleas and ticks on your dog’s collar as well as keep them from biting you.

Thyme

Thyme is a great option for repelling ticks. You can add it directly to your skin or clothing in order to stave off the tiny bloodsuckers. To make a spray, mix thyme oil with water in a bowl and use a spray bottle to apply the mixture directly to your body where you think ticks might be hiding (don’t forget your legs!). If you don’t have any thyme oil at home, you can also just rub some dried thyme leaves directly onto your skin as an alternative method of application.
