Ticks are very common in cats, so there is a huge market for tick repellent for cats. If ticks have become a nuisance in the home, it’s best to take precautions to prevent tick infestations. Natural tick repellent is the safest way to protect your home and pets from ticks without resorting to toxic chemicals. Controlling ticks on your dog or cat doesn’t have to break the bank. There are cheaper ways, such as homemade tick repellent, to ward off these pesky pests naturally that also work great.
Natural Tick Repellent For Cats
Do ticks love your cat? If they do here is a quick, easy, and all-natural way to get rid of them!
Ticks can be a real nuisance for cats, and even worse they can carry diseases. If your cat is bitten by a tick it will become infected and the tick can be difficult to remove.
There are many ways to get rid of ticks on your cat such as applying anti-tick shampoo, or using an insecticidal spray such as Fipronil or Permethrin. Both of these products are toxic so you should use them with care.
A few quick notes before we start:
Before we get started, there are a few quick notes that you should know.
- Be sure to test the oil on your cat’s skin before spraying it all over them. This will ensure that your cat isn’t sensitive to any of the oils and that they won’t have an allergic reaction to them. You can test by applying a small amount behind their ears or along their tummy, wait 24 hours, then see if they show any signs of irritation (like redness or scratching). If everything seems okay after 24 hours, go ahead and spray directly onto your cat!
- Make sure not to spray around their eyes or genitals. The oils may irritate these areas, so just apply as directed above instead (behind ears/along tummy).
- Never use on kittens under 12 weeks old! Their immune systems aren’t developed enough yet for this kind of product; plus it could even be toxic for them at such a young age!
Test a small spot first to make sure your cat isn’t sensitive to the oils.
Before applying the oil to your cat, test a small spot on their skin to make sure they are not sensitive to the oils. If you have a male cat, be careful not to get any oil in his eyes as it can cause temporary blindness. If you’ve used this method before and found that it works for your household pet, then feel free to add an extra step of rubbing some lavender oil on top of their paws so they’ll smell good too!
Don’t spray around the eyes, ears, or genitals.
It’s important to note that you should not spray your cat’s eyes, ears, or genitals. These areas are very sensitive and can be irritated by the product.
Never use on kittens under 12 weeks old.
Never use tea tree oil on kittens under 12 weeks old. Tea tree is toxic to cats, as are geranium and eucalyptus. Rosemary is also toxic to cats, so avoid using it on them as well. Kittens younger than 12 weeks old can’t process these oils, which means they will be unable to process the toxicity of the oils being applied to their fur.
Ingredients
- To make the spray, place the five drops of tea tree oil, geranium oil, eucalyptus oil and rosemary oil into an empty spray bottle.
- Add one cup of water to the bottle. The amount of water added will fill up to the fill line on your particular spray bottle.
- Place lid on bottle tightly and shake well before each use!
1 empty spray bottle
There are many different types of spray bottles, but you will want to make sure that the one you choose is empty and clean. It is important that there be no residue from any chemicals in the bottle, as this could cause harm to your cat and potentially even your own skin if it comes into contact with the repellent.
To ensure that your spray bottle is clean, wash it thoroughly with soap and warm water or put it through a cycle on your dishwasher (this may be particularly helpful if you are using an old spray bottle). If there are any hard-to-reach areas inside of the bottle where water and soap cannot reach, use a small brush to apply some disinfectant directly onto those surfaces before rinsing out again with hot water.
1 cup of water (plus extra for the fill line)
- Add the water to your spray bottle first, then add the essential oils. If you don’t have filtered water available, go ahead and use tap water for this recipe.
- Fill your spray bottle with the diluted solution and shake well before each use.
5 drops Tea Tree Oil
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
- Not for use on cats under 12 weeks old. Avoid using on pregnant or lactating animals, or animals with a history of seizures; exercise caution when using Tea Tree Oil in cats with liver or kidney disease, as it may cause organ damage.
5 drops Geranium oil
In a glass bottle, add 5 drops of Geranium oil. Repeat this step for each of the oils in the recipe and store them in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
Next, you will want to apply your tick repellent on your cat before they venture outside so they can be protected. You can do this by wetting their fur with warm water and then massaging in one drop of each repellent oil into their skin (remembering not to put it near their eyes).
5 drops Eucalyptus oil
Many essential oils are antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial. They can be used to kill the ticks that have already latched on.
Eucalyptus oil is an effective tick repellent. It’s also a good deodorizer, so it may help you keep your house from smelling like an old dog when you’re not around to take care of him!
5 drops Rosemary oil
Rosemary oil is derived from the mint family and has antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal properties. Because of this, it can be used to help control fleas and ticks on your cat. It is also good for their skin and coats by providing a protective barrier from dust mites. Rosemary oil can also be used as an insect repellent because of its ability to kill mosquitoes when applied topically on skin areas exposed to sunlight.
Directions*
Directions:
- 1. Mix together the water and the coconut oil in a bowl. You may want to use your hands to mix them thoroughly, but this can be messy so be careful! If you are using a spoon, make sure you don’t leave any lumps in your mixture.
- 2. Once they are well mixed together, add in your essential oils and stir again until everything is thoroughly combined. Store this mixture in a glass jar or spray bottle (make sure you clean it first!) for later use as needed throughout the day.*
When using your product on your cat(s), simply spray it onto their fur and skin (avoiding their face). They will likely shake off some of the repellent after application but that’s okay! Just repeat as often as necessary until fleas have been successfully deterred from biting them again during an infestation period when there is risk of exposure due to greater numbers being present; this may mean reapplying every few hours or so depending on circumstances — just keep checking until no more scratching occurs! If any excess residue remains on fabric surfaces like furniture or carpets etc., blot it up with paper towels first before vacuuming away any remaining dust particles later by hand (or vacuum cleaner) once completely dried out – please avoid splashing liquids around unnecessarily wherever possible due to safety concerns about potential spillage risks which could lead towards accidents happening later down road if not handled properly now!
*Fill the bottle 3/4 of the way full with water. Add in oils (the more you add the stronger it will be). Shake well before every use to mix.*
- Fill the bottle 3/4 of the way full with water. This is important because you don’t want it to leak and ruin your cat’s fur or furniture.
- Add in oils (the more you add the stronger it will be). Shake well before every use to mix.
- Do not use on kittens under 12 weeks old.
You may have heard that essential oils can be toxic if ingested by cats but that’s only if they ingest large amounts over a long period of time. Using this mixture externally and not on food products is fine and it should be fine for your cat.

Essential oils are great for many things, including repelling ticks! The amount of essential oils in this recipe is small enough to be safe for your cat (and you). If you do get some on their fur, make sure to rinse it off immediately with water rather than just brushing it off because we don’t want any tick bites around the mouth area of our furry friends! 🙂
