Whether they come in through holes in the walls, cracks in cement or any other type of entrance, you have to do something quickly to get rid of ants in order to protect your home and loved ones from them. The last thing you want is a bunch of ants crawling all over the floor, counters, table and just about everywhere else. Mild cases of an ant problem can be dealt with effectively by simply vacuuming up the various insects and their pathways. However, if your infestation is more severe or if the ants are coming in over long periods of time, then you may want to learn a little more about natural ways to get rid of these pests for good.

Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Ants In The House

Black Pepper and Cayenne Pepper

While it may not be the most practical method, black pepper and cayenne pepper can be used in the kitchen and on your patio. These pungent spices will work to deter an ant infestation, but you’ll have to reapply them daily until the ants are gone (or until you get sick of smelling them!).

While this doesn’t sound like a long-term solution for getting rid of ants, it does make for an effective short-term one!

Cinnamon

Sprinkle cinnamon powder along the path of ants to deter them from entering your house. You can also mix cinnamon powder with sugar and water to make a paste, which you should then apply to the ant trail. Ants don’t like the smell of cinnamon, so they will avoid the area if there is enough of this smell around. It’s important not to use too much sugar or else it will attract more ants!

If you don’t have any cinnamon in your kitchen already (or if you’re like me and forgot where I put my jar), pick some up at your local grocery store or pharmacy before applying this method.

Coffee Grounds

• Mix coffee grounds with water.
• Apply the mixture to ant openings, like cracks around windows and doors, behind appliances and along baseboards.
• The strong smell will repel the ants and they won’t be able to return!

White Vinegar And Water

The combination of vinegar and water can be sprayed on ants to kill them. This works best when used outside the house, but it can also be effective inside if you have an ant trail or your ants are coming in through a small crack in the wall.

Baking Soda, Sugar and Borax

To get rid of ants, you can use baking soda, sugar and borax.

Baking Soda: Mix 1 part baking soda with water in a spray bottle. Spray on any trails or nests. The acid from the baking soda will kill them even if they are not eating it directly. It will eventually turn into a foam which is an effective barrier against ants, but be aware that this method takes time to work so don’t expect quick results when using this solution alone.

Sugar: Mix equal parts sugar and borax powder in a bowl until it forms a fine powder (but not so fine that it turns into clumps). Sprinkle some of the mixture onto your ant problem areas (such as along their path). Ants will take this back to their nest where they eat it while carrying out other tasks such as looking for food or taking care of young ones (baby ants). After eating the mixture they become sick and die within 24 hours!

You don’t need poisonous chemicals to deal with ants.

When you think about it, there’s no need for chemicals to deal with ants. Natural products are better for the environment, better for pets and children, and can even be used by people with allergies.

You may have heard that ant baits contain poisonous chemicals that could hurt your family members or pets if they get into them. This is true—but only if you use a typical commercial product! When you make your own bait from food items in your pantry, it won’t contain any harmful ingredients because there is nothing poisonous to add in the first place!
