Cockroaches are among the most disgusting insects in the world. Many things about cockroaches make them difficult to tolerate. In fact, a whopping 50% of people who have experienced a cockroach infestation say that they have nightmares about cockroaches as a result of their experience. Cockroaches are some of the ugliest creatures you’d ever want to meet. They just do their business in any corner of your house and no living things like them at all. No matter how hard you try, killing them completely is by no way possible, so here are a few natural ways that you can use to get rid of cockroaches in a safe and effective manner.
Natural Ways To Keep Cockroaches Away
Clean up your kitchen.
- Clean up your kitchen.
This is a no-brainer, but it’s worth pointing out: keeping your kitchen clean and free of food crumbs will help keep cockroaches away. You should always keep counters clean, put away food when you’re done eating (or even better, store it in sealed containers), sweep floors regularly and make sure any trash is stored in well-sealed containers. If you’re interested in learning more tips on how to get rid of roaches once they’ve already invaded your home, read our guide here!
Use catnip.
Did you know that catnip is a plant? It’s true! Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb that can be grown indoors or out, and it grows best in sandy soils with full sun. While many people think of it as an herb for felines to enjoy, it does have some repellent properties for cockroaches as well. In fact, if you grow catnip in your garden, the plant will attract (and keep away) pesky insects like ants and spiders.
Catnip contains nepetalactone which acts as a pheromone for feline animals. When cats smell this scent they go into a state of euphoria—yes, this means rolling around on the ground and flailing about like crazy! The chemical also has an effect on other animals such as mice and rats who will stay away from areas where there is plenty of nepetalactone present because they don’t want to be high all day long either!
As far as human beings are concerned though? Don’t worry—the amount of nepetalactone found within catnip isn’t enough to cause any type of hallucinogenic effects whatsoever–so feel free (or force yourself?) into buying some if you’re trying hard not just because they repel cockroaches but also because they’re pretty darn cute too!
Keep bay leaves at hand.
Bay leaves have a strong scent that cockroaches do not like. If you have them in the kitchen, it will make the place less attractive for roaches, who prefer to hide under furniture and in dark corners. Also, bay leaves are useful for keeping other insects away from your house. They can be placed near doors and windows to keep mosquitos out of the house or hung inside closets to keep moths away.
Bay leaves are also good for your health—they contain d-limonene, an antimicrobial compound that helps prevent bacterial growth on food exposed to air (and on surfaces where food is prepared). The smell of bay leaves repels mosquitoes and other insects while also helping prevent food spoilage caused by microbial activity!
Lastly but certainly not least, they’re pretty cheap: $10 per pound at my local grocery store!
Keep cucumber peels handy.
Cockroaches are gross, and understandably you want to get rid of them. (Or at least make sure they stay out of your kitchen.) Luckily, there are some natural methods that can help keep cockroaches away from your home.
If you have a German cockroach problem, cucumber peels might be the solution you’re looking for. Cucumber peels repel German roaches more than any other room freshener or scent; in fact, it’s so effective at keeping these pests away that many people recommend placing cucumber peels near areas where they frequently appear.
It may sound strange at first, but the science behind this trick is actually pretty simple: cucumbers contain an amino acid called furocoumarin which has been proven to kill insects when ingested by them or otherwise applied directly to their bodies in high enough concentrations. When fruit is exposed to light while growing (like on vines), compounds like furocoumarin are produced as a defense mechanism against insect predators—but since humans don’t eat fruit with its skin still intact (and since fruits aren’t usually grown under UV lights), most foods containing furocoumarins aren’t harmful to us when prepared properly!
Use a powder composed of equal parts of baking soda and sugar.
Baking soda and sugar are ingredients that homeowners use in their kitchens every day. While they may be safe to consume, cockroaches would rather not be killed by them. Mix these two ingredients together and they’ll do just that!
Baking soda is a base, which means it’s highly alkaline. Sugar is an acid, which means it’s highly acidic. When these two substances come into contact with each other in a solution, a chemical reaction takes place that produces carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These bubbles are what will attract roaches to your mixture and kill them! Not only does this method not involve using any harmful chemicals (something you definitely don’t want around children or pets), but it also masks the bitter taste of baking soda so you can enjoy its other benefits as well!
Use tobacco leaves.
You can use tobacco leaves to keep cockroaches away. This method is not as popular as some of the others on this list, but it still works well.
- Place whole or crumbled tobacco leaves around your home in areas where you frequently see cockroaches crawling around. The strong smell will repel them and keep them from entering your house.
- If you want to make sure that the tobacco leaves are working properly, sprinkle some flour on the floor underneath them so that you can see if there are any footprints when you come back later!
Don’t leave dirty dishes sitting in the sink overnight.
The worst part about roaches is that they are attracted to your house when you leave dirty dishes in the sink. They will eat just about anything, so it’s important to make sure that your dishes are clean before putting them away. If you must leave food in the sink overnight, make sure to wash it first.
Place cloves in various corners of your house.
Cloves are a natural pest repellent and can be used to deter cockroaches from entering your home.
Place cloves in various corners of your house, such as under cabinets and inside drawers or cupboards. Furthermore, planting clove trees around your home will also help repel cockroaches.
You can keep cockroaches away with catnip, cucumbers, cloves, and more!
Cockroaches are a serious problem for people all over the world. While they don’t spread disease, their presence in your home can be an indicator of other infestations, such as mold and mildew. In addition to this, cockroaches can carry bacteria (e.g., E coli) on their bodies that could make you sick if ingested or cause an allergic reaction if you touch them.
Luckily, there are several natural repellents you can use to keep cockroaches out of your home without resorting to harsh pesticides or synthetic chemicals! Here’s how:
- Catnip – This herb is known for its ability to attract cats but will also discourage roaches from entering your home! Just crush some leaves into a fine powder and sprinkle around doorways and windowsills where roaches tend to enter.
- Cloves – Like catnip, cloves have been shown through studies at Rutgers University that they repel cockroaches by masking any food odors in the home (which attract them). Cloves work best when combined with other ingredients listed here; sprinkle whole cloves around doors/windows/garages like you would use salt on icy sidewalks outside during winter months!
- Updated with a new, rapid fire Cross Bolt Safety.
- Improved engineering on trigger mechanism. It’s now VERY light – so be careful! Keep away from children and pets.
- Barrel has been lifted & patridge sight added for extremely accurate shooting.
- Improved, more durable salt hopper makes tactical reloads easy during the heat of battle.
- Includes 90-Day Warranty, Limited 1-Year Warranty with Proof of Purchase from Skell. Non-toxic, accurate within 3 feet & no batteries needed.
