Fleas are hard to get rid of, and if you’re a first time owner, chances are, kitten has fleas. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing – with the right flea treatment for kittens 8 weeks (like ours, for example), you’ll be able to eliminate these pesky insects from your life. Owning a cat comes with some responsibility. One of those responsibilities is flea treatment. Fleas can be a problem to adult cats and kittens alike. You don’t want to see your new kitten covered in fleas, right? I know you don’t. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of flea treatments for kittens.
New Kitten Has Fleas
Introduction
In our last post, we talked about how to prepare for a new cat. In this post, we’re going to explore what to do with your new kitten if it has fleas. Flea infestations are never fun and they can be difficult to resolve. But don’t worry—we’ll walk you through all the steps of dealing with fleas so that you can get back to enjoying your new feline friend!
Spot-on treatments are usually the best option, as they eliminate fleas at all stages of the life cycle.
Most cats and kittens will be treated with a spot-on solution. These are applied to the back of the neck and prevent fleas from biting, preventing them from transferring the infection to your cat.
Kittens can be treated from 6 weeks of age, but usually it’s best to wait until they’re over 12 weeks old before applying a spot-on treatment, as younger kittens have less developed immune systems. Some products also recommend waiting until your kitten is fully weaned before using them, as this may reduce their risk of an allergic reaction to the chemicals in some treatments (commonly found in Frontline Spot On).
Spot-on treatments are usually applied monthly, though some cats may need more frequent applications if they’re suffering from heavy infestations or live in areas where fleas are common throughout most of the year.
Clean your home
The first step to getting rid of fleas is to clean your home. Wash all bedding, bath towels and anything else that may have come into contact with your kitten or another animal that had fleas. If you don’t have time to wash all these things right away, at least put them in a sealed plastic bag until you can do so. You may want to consider washing any other items that were recently purchased and could be infested as well—for example, if you bought a new blanket for your cat but didn’t wash it yet because it was too hot outside, now would be the time to do so before putting it down on his bedding!
Kittens are very curious by nature and love playing with everything they can get their paws on (and sometimes even things they shouldn’t). This means they’ll most likely find their way into areas where they’re not supposed to go—like under couches or beds or behind curtains. It’s important that these areas are cleaned thoroughly before letting them back out again so no more parasites can hitchhike onto yourself or another family member who might unknowingly bring them inside again!
Use a flea comb on your cat daily
Make sure to use a flea comb on your cat daily. The best time to check for fleas is in the morning, when the fur is most loose and open. If you don’t have a flea comb, you can just brush through his coat with your fingers.
If there are any attached fleas that aren’t moving, they’ll come off easily with the comb. The eggs will also be visible—they look like little black dots on top of the hairs. The last thing to check for is dirt from where adult fleas have been laying their eggs (this goes away once a week).
Try using herbs and supplements
- Essential oils. You can use essential oils such as peppermint or eucalyptus to repel fleas. These are safe for kittens, but do not apply them directly to the skin. Instead, dilute the oil with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil and rub it on your kitten’s fur (and on any exposed skin).
- Herbs. Another option is to incorporate herbs into your kitten’s diet. Tansy tea or fresh tansy leaves can be made into a soothing tea for your kitten that will help keep fleas away by repelling them through smell alone! Be sure not to give this tea when pregnant cats are around as they may become distressed by its strong odor and potentially lose their babies prematurely if they smell too much of it before giving birth. Otherwise though? Perfectly safe!
- Supplements & sprays: If you prefer something more direct than herbal remedies like tansy teas then there are also supplements available over-the-counter which contain concentrated nutrients known scientifically as “botanicals” including pyrethrins and spinosad – these work by paralyzing insects so that they cannot bite anymore–but make sure whatever product you choose has been approved for human consumption first before using it yourself (or worse yet–your pets!)
Your kitten will be flea-free in no time!
You will get there eventually, but it may take some time. Patience is key! If you have fleas, don’t give up hope just yet. There are many different methods for getting rid of them and we’re sure one will work for your kitten.
You can try using products designed to kill fleas on cats such as Advantage II or Frontline Plus. These products contain an ingredient called imidacloprid that helps keep the pests away from your furry friend! They also come in chewable tablets that are easy to administer and tasty treats at the same time! If these are too expensive for you, then maybe it’s time to try homemade remedies instead like garlic or brewer’s yeast supplements mixed into food each day until gone which should work within two weeks if done properly so check with a vet before trying something new yourself since cats can be very sensitive creatures when it comes down to their health needs.”
Conclusion
The best thing to do is schedule an appointment with your vet. They’ll be able to help you figure out where your kitten got the fleas and how to get rid of them before they become a problem for you too.
