Ni Hao Kai-Lan is a children’s animated series that ran from 2005 to 2013, on Nickelodeon. The show was in Chinese with English subtitles. It was about the adventures of Kai-Lan, a girl who loves to explore and learn. On one occasion, when she went exploring and got lost in the rain, a nest of wind ants took her in until she could find her way home. The wind ants’ names are Zai Lan (unisex), Nini Lan (feminine), Lulu (feminine), Ying Ying (feminine), Shi Shi (masculine), Bai Bao (masculine), Bo Bo and Ai Mei (feminines).

Introduction

I have to admit, I’m a little biased towards this theme. Anything that’s related to ants is automatically going to be given a higher rating from me. After all, I’m the guy who put out that article about Ants on a Log being the best snack ever created. You know what else is amazing? Ni Hao Kai Lan. This was one of those shows where I wasn’t sure if it was for kids or not, but it turns out it’s for both! Kai Lan is basically Nick Jr.’s answer to Dora The Explorer and Diego, but with an added element of Chinese culture added in, making it much better than either of those two shows. In fact, if you’re not familiar with Ni Hao Kai Lan, then let me tell you that it’s kind of like a mix between Dora The Explorer and Yo Gabba Gabba… except without all the crappy music and lame characters who sing annoying songs every time they appear on screen (which is almost constantly).

“Super Duper Dance” tells the story of Kai Lan and her friends, who dance to music.

Jiejie’s New Shoes

In this episode, Jiejie is Kai-Lan’s older sister. She is wearing some new shoes that are too big for her. She doesn’t want to wear them because they hurt her feet and she keeps tripping over them. Kai-Lan tries to help Jiejie by finding some smaller shoes for her, but then Jiejie finds a pair of boots that fit perfectly!

Mr. Fluffy Goes Away

Kai Lan and Jiejie are surprised when Mr. Fluffy leaves home. They wonder where he is going, but Kai Lan has a feeling that he will be back soon. Luckily, Mr. Fluffy comes back just in time for dinner!

The First Garden

Kai-Lan and her friends have a garden. They grow their own vegetables, flowers and plants. They have a garden party where they eat all kinds of different foods grown from the garden. Kai-Lan’s favorite food is the cherry tomatoes that she grew herself!

They also have a big wedding in the spring with flowers everywhere. There are even waterfalls that come down from high up in the mountains too! It’s so pretty!

The Stomping Land

Now that you’re familiar with the Stomping Land and what it looks like, it’s time to go over how to get there.

If Kai Lan wants to head over there, she’ll have to find a way through the forest. If she wants help getting through the forest, she needs her friends to come along too! They can go together or split up (it doesn’t matter).

Once they’re in the forest, they’ll notice that there are some paths made by people who’ve come before them—these paths will take them right where they need to go! They might even discover some cool new places on their travels through these paths!

Trip to the Moon

• You and your children will love the story of Kai-Lan and her friends as they go on a trip to the moon!
• In this episode, Kai-Lan and her friends visit the moon. There they see many things: The sun, stars, earth, clouds, sea…and even some trees! But there aren’t any flowers growing on the moon—that would be silly! Use this book to introduce children to different places around our solar system (and beyond) by using simple language and beautiful illustrations.

Kai Lan has a pet ant named Anty. Kai Lan and Anty love to play together! When Kai shared her favorite games with us, we were very impressed with the variety.
