Non Chemical Bed Bug Treatment
Introduction
Bed bugs are awful. I had no idea, at the time of writing this, that I’d be writing about bed bugs in a blog post. When it happened, I was sitting on my couch in my apartment and my dog immediately jumped of the couch to attack one of them. Then I realized that they were not ants or any other kind of bug; they were actually bed bugs. It turns out that these blood-thirsty little parasites have infested thousands of apartments across the globe, including the very place I live in now. But after years of being bitten and latched onto while sleeping and raiding through my belongings looking for food (I’m sure they find me delicious), you would think that maybe it’s time to do something about this problem myself. Thankfully there are options, both chemical and nonchemical, which will help rid your room—and your home—of these pests once and for all!
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are small insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They are oval-shaped, brown and flat with a shiny appearance. They can be up to 5mm long and as thin as a credit card. The female bed bug has a pointed egg-laying tube called an ootheca (plural oothecae) that extends beyond her abdomen; she uses it to hold eggs until they hatch into nymphs (baby bed bugs). Bed bug eggs are white or yellowish and about 1 mm in length.
Bed bugs cannot fly but they can crawl quickly. You may see signs of them such as dark spots on sheets or mattresses where they have fed or left their waste behind, smears of blood where they have fed and flat skins from molting after growing too big for their current skin
Bed bugs – how did I get them?
Bed bugs are small wingless insects that live in cracks and crevices of bed frames, mattresses and box springs. They spread by crawling from one infested item to another, often within a home. Bed bugs can be found in any part of the world.
Bed bugs have five immature nymph life stages and will go through a total of seven nymphal instars before they reach maturity. Nymphs, or baby bed bugs are nearly microscopic when they first hatch but grow quickly (a year) to 1/4 inch long or larger as adults. Adult female bedbugs lay 5-7 eggs each day which hatch into nymphs after about 10 days depending on conditions such as room temperature and humidity levels found in homes today.”
Non chemical bed bug treatment
Bed bugs are a real problem. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly one in five Americans has been affected by bed bug infestations, which can be difficult to get rid of. Bed bug treatment is also big business and has become increasingly popular as more people learn about the dangers of chemical pesticides. As a result, commercial businesses have sprung up offering all types of services for dealing with these pests, including heat treatments, fumigation and specialized methods like vacuuming out every single nook and cranny where a critter might be hiding (which requires multiple passes).
But these methods are not necessarily effective or practical for everyone: they’re expensive and time consuming; they require professional expertise; many people don’t want to put themselves or their belongings into contact with potentially toxic chemicals.* Some homeowners opt instead for non-chemical approaches such as encasing mattresses in mattress covers or using glue traps around their homes.* Studies show that this type of self-help approach may work well enough when dealing with small infestations but may not adequately eliminate larger populations.*
Non chemical bed bug treatment. Step 1. Evaluate the room.
First, you must evaluate the room.
- Check for signs of bed bugs. Look behind headboards, in bed frames and box springs, under carpets and furniture, in electrical outlets and picture frames (bed bugs can hide here).
- Clean up clutter. Clutter can make it harder to spot the presence of bed bugs because they like to hide in dark places with lots of clutter. It will also distract you from seeing them as they move around your home during treatment!
- Vacuum everything! If there are stains on your mattress or furniture it could be because a bed bug has been smashed against these surfaces while sleeping/staying there at night; vacuuming can remove these dead bodies before they have time to start emitting their pheromones which attract other nearby bugs towards themselves – so vacuum away!
- Clean up areas where bed bugs might be hiding: Areas like behind any exposed pipes or outlets should be cleaned out thoroughly using a brush attachment if necessary; simply shaking out all dust bunnies and cobwebs into an empty garbage bag is also good enough if done thoroughly enough (they’ll probably still try hiding somewhere else though).
Non chemical bed bug treatment. Step 2. Begin the preparation.
For the second step, you must prepare the room. This includes preparing the bed and its linens, as well as spraying other surfaces that might have been affected by bed bugs (such as baseboards). As you prepare to treat your home for bedbugs, keep in mind that preparation is critical to success!
Prepare the Room
Prepare the Bed: Remove all items from your bed except for one sheet or blanket. Place these items into sealable bags and set aside until later treatment begins (see below).
Prepare the Bedding: Once you’ve put away everything but a single sheet or blanket, place this on top of any remaining pillows on your mattress. You should now have at least one layer of fabric between yourself and any potential hiding places for bugs. If desired, place another protective layer between yourself and this fabric by placing additional sheets or blankets overtop of it—but make sure they’re not touching anything else under them!
Non chemical bed bug treatment. Step 3. Launder all clothing and linens
- Wash all clothes, bedding and linens in hot water.
- Use laundry detergent with an active ingredient such as Permethrin or Diazinon.
Non chemical bed bug treatment. Stpe 4. Encasement for mattresses, box springs and pillows
Please note that encasements are not a cure for bed bugs, but they can help keep them from hiding in your mattress and box spring.
Encase your mattress and box spring in an impermeable fabric cover that will hold up to constant washing. Bed bug-proof cases may be purchased at local hardware stores or home improvement centers. When shopping for a mattress encasement, choose one made of tightly woven fabric (the tighter the weave the better). The “weave” refers to how closely spaced together the threads are on one side of the cloth. The closer together they are, the better protection from bed bugs you’ll get from this material.
If you have found evidence of bedbugs in your home: move quickly! Immediately isolate any items that have been infested (box springs/mattresses) within an impenetrable plastic bag sealed with duct tape until it can be professionally treated by a pest control professional
Non chemical bed bug treatment. Step 5. Removing clutter from floors and storage areas
Removing clutter from floors and storage areas is an important step in eliminating bed bugs. By removing clutter, you can eliminate hiding places for bed bugs. You may want to consider hiring a professional cleaner to help with this step if you have a lot of clutter or are unable to complete the task yourself.
Non chemical bed bug treatment. Step 6. Cleaning with a vacuum cleaner
Vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters are particularly effective at removing bed bug eggs from mattresses, box springs and pillows. Vacuuming can also help remove bugs that have been dislodged by other treatments such as steam cleaning.
It is important to use the crevice tool to get into the seams and crevices of the mattress and box spring, along with any cracks in floors or walls where bugs may be hiding. Pay special attention to areas where you see fecal stains on your sheets or mattress. Also make sure you clean around switch plates, door frames and window sills (usually good places for them).
Non chemical bed bug treatment – diatomaceous earth application
Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural product that is made from crushed fossilized diatoms, the skeletal remains of a certain type of algae. The powder looks like fine glass shards and has been used since ancient times as an abrasive in toothpaste and other products. Today, it’s also used to control bed bugs and other insects.
How does DE kill bed bugs? When applied to infested areas such as bedding or mattresses, the sharp edges of each particle cut into their waxy outer shell. The insect can’t release its waste products or breathe properly when its respiratory openings are blocked with DE dust particles, eventually causing death by suffocation or dehydration if left untreated over time.
Bed bugs are terrible creatures but you can get rid of them without pesticides and insecticides
Bed bugs are terrible creatures, but you can get rid of them without pesticides and insecticides. Your first step should be to find out if you have bed bugs in your home. Here are the steps to take:
- Clean your house thoroughly, especially any areas where the infestation is suspected.
- Wash all bedding and clothes in hot water—at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit—for at least 30 minutes.
- Vacuum every area of your house using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter that will remove any live or dead insects within it as well as their eggs (if they are laying them).
Conclusion
