Nyc Bed Bug Rider

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) provides assistance to tenants with bed bugs in their apartments. Beginning October 1, 2015, HPD will also help tenants pay for the purchase and installation of bed bug mattress covers, box springs and bed bug protection kits if they are unable to afford these items. The New York City Department of Health has issued another bed bug warning on a number of hotels in the city. The agency delivered the following letter to approximately 4,000 hotels and other lodging establishments throughout the city reporting them to be infested with bedbugs.

Nyc Bed Bug Rider

Introduction

Bed bugs are a common problem in New York City, and we’ve created this rider to help tenants and landlords deal with infestations. This guide includes the following:

What bed bugs are

How to identify them

How to report an infestation

How to get rid of them

Bed bugs are small, flat, blood-sucking insects that live in wall voids or cracks. They will seek out their human host at night to feed, usually while the person is asleep.

Bed bugs are small, flat, blood-sucking insects that live in wall voids or cracks. They will seek out their human host at night to feed, usually while the person is asleep.

Bed bugs generally hide near where people sleep during the day, and can be found in a number of places: mattress seams, headboards and bed frames; behind wall-mounted picture frames; along baseboards; in box springs; cracks in upholstery and wood floors; door frames; window sills and any other locations where they’re protected from sunlight. Because they need to eat every three to five days they often travel over 100 feet (30 meters) to reach a host—and this distance can increase if there are multiple hosts nearby.

If you live in an apartment with bed bugs, do not attempt to treat them yourself. This can lead to further infestations and possible injury. The best way to deal with bed bugs is to contact a bed bug certified exterminator who can identify the problem and apply treatment. (NYC 311 Infoline, 311).

Bed bugs are not a sign of poor hygiene or dirtiness. Bed bugs will infest any place that is warm and has access to food and water, including your home. Bed bugs are not a sign of poverty or uncleanliness. Bed bugs can occur in homes that have been meticulously maintained or where people who do not practice good sanitation live because they travel easily from person to person and through furniture, luggage and clothing.

If you suspect that a tenant may have been bitten by a bed bug, offer the following suggestions:

If you suspect that a tenant may have been bitten by a bed bug, offer the following suggestions:

  • Keep furniture away from walls. Bed bugs may be found in seams and edges of mattresses, box springs, carpeting, wallpaper and behind baseboards.
  • Remove flammable materials from around the bed.
  • Use encasements for mattresses and box springs. If an infestation is confirmed with laboratory testing, contact an exterminator to treat for this pest; do not use pesticides that are not approved for use on people or pets as they can cause health problems.

Keep furniture away from the walls.

Monitor the bed bug and mattress situation.

When you bring your furniture into the apartment, it’s best not to place it against the wall, since bed bugs like to hide in cracks and crevices. So keep all furniture away from walls (including headboards) and keep bedding in a sealed plastic bag until you can launder or dry clean it—and then store it away from where you sleep at night. If possible, use a bed bug encasement on your mattress before putting sheets back on: encasements don’t completely protect against bites but they’re an effective barrier to prevent infestations from spreading through your home

Remove all flammable materials from around the bed.

To help keep bed bugs away, remove all flammable materials from around the bed. Also, wash all sheets and clothing in hot water, and dry them on high heat. The heat will kill any bed bugs that might be hiding in your linens.

To protect yourself from being bitten by a bed bug while you sleep:

  • Use double-sided tape to seal off crevices where cracks or holes could allow for an infestation;
  • If possible, bring an extra pillow case with you to hotels so that you can store it in another location to prevent bringing any unwanted critters back home with you when traveling;

Use encasements for mattresses and box springs.

Encasements are the best way to prevent bed bugs from getting into your bed. They’re usually made of a fabric that is resistant to bed bugs, and they fit snugly over the mattress and box spring. It’s important to remember that encasements are not a permanent solution for bed bug infestations; they can help prevent them from getting into your mattress, but if you continue to have problems with an infestation, it might be necessary to use other methods as well.

Encasements can also be used on furniture such as couches or chairs that may also be vulnerable to an infestation.

Do not use pesticides that are not approved for use on people or pets.

Do not use pesticides that are not approved for use on people or pets.

Pesticides can be dangerous to humans and pets. For example, some pesticides are toxic or harmful to children and pets, while others can cause harm to the user and/or the environment. You should also be cautious of any product that is labeled “bait” because it can attract dogs and cats, who may then eat it accidentally. In general, it is best to avoid using any pesticide unless absolutely necessary; if you do choose to use a pesticide in your home, keep your pet out of the area until you have completed all steps of treatment (and beyond).

Discard any items that cannot be treated.

The next step is to remove any infested items from your home. If an item cannot be treated, the best thing to do is to throw it away in a sealed plastic bag. It’s important to note that some objects such as mattresses cannot be discarded with regular trash and should instead be disposed of at a recycling center or a special dumpster for bed bug waste.

Once you’ve removed all infested items, take a moment to clean up any clutter around your bed and bedroom (such as toys or clothing). This will help ensure that no bed bugs can find their way back into your home after treatment.

Wash all linens in hot water, then dry them on high heat (including backpacks, stuffed animals and other fabric items).

  • Wash all linens in hot water, then dry them on high heat (including backpacks, stuffed animals and other fabric items).
  • Don’t use cold water. Instead, wash your clothes at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or higher for at least 30 minutes. If you have a front-loading washer that can reach that temperature, it’s ideal; otherwise, you’ll need to do multiple loads of laundry over the course of several days to ensure that all of the bed bugs are dead and gone.
  • Don’t use bleach or any other chemical cleaners to treat infested clothing—but if you want an extra boost of insect control against this stubborn pest, consider adding some borax or rubbing alcohol into your wash cycle as well! And if possible: stick with synthetic fibers like acrylic or polyester when picking out new outfits instead of cotton ones because they’re easier to clean effectively without harming anyone else nearby who might get sick from breathing too much toxic vapors (especially since our skin absorbs chemicals through contact!).

Conclusion

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of and require special treatment by an exterminator.
