The animated series was developed from an idea of Laurent Malbranche, who proposed it to the writers after having read a book about cockroaches. The series features four anthropomorphic cockroaches—Oggy, Jack, Mark and Joey— living in New York City. While they share the same residence, they lead individual lives and frequently lose sight of their friendship. In each episode, Oggy and the Cockroaches explores various situations with themes such as conflict resolution, or environmental issues.

Each 7-minute short (there are at least 351 of them) follows the life of the rotund blue cat Oggy, who has the misfortune to share the same house with three cute but exceptionally mischievous roaches: Dee Dee, Marky and Joey. Their sole purpose of existence is to have fun with Oggy by pulling a series of practical jokes. Oggy is sometimes helped by his cousin Jack, a green cat with a knack for mechanics and a short fuse. Factor in a burly neighborhood bulldog named Bob and a Love Interest named Olivia (introduced in later seasons), and you have a great slapstick set-up. The show debuted on France 3 in 1998 and originally ended in 1999. Things changed up during that same year when Marc du Pontavice left Gaumont to form Xilam which later acquired all of Gaumont Multimedia’s properties the following year. In 2008, the show was revived for a third and a fourth season in 2008 and 2012 respectively which moved from France 3 to Canal+ Family and was later renewed for a additional three seasons, this time on Gulli until production axed in 2019. In 2021, the show was Un-Cancelled when a revival debuted on Gulli. This time, Oggy now has to take care of an elephant named Piya but still has to deal with his mischievous rivals.

Oggy and the Cockroaches is renowned for its expressive use of mime — the cats may make cat sounds or (rarely) speak in gibberish, but there is no dialog, and written words are kept to a minimum. Except in the US, where the show ran briefly on Fox Kids in the late 90s without success, and returned in the 2010s on Nickelodeon only to run into a controversy involving censorship which led to the show’s quick removal.
