Orchid Ants

The orchid ants (genus Myrmecia) are a very large and diverse genus of ants, with over 180 species described so far. They are distributed throughout Australia and the surrounding countries, with several species also found in New Guinea, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The majority of orchid ant species are terrestrial, many inhabiting dense forests or semi-arid scrubland. There is only one known aquatic species (Myrmecia nana), which inhabits temporary rain pools in an arid part of Western Australia. These attractive ants are fairly large and come in a wide array of different colours and patterns. They also have huge heads that account for around 17% of their body length. This is a larger proportion than in any other ant species!

Orchid Ants

Orchid Ants are an unusual species. They live in the rainforests of South East Asia and are known for their ability to mimic the scent of orchids, which allows them to trick male wasps into pollinating them.

Orchid Ants are one of the few ant species that can reproduce without males. They do this by cloning themselves through a process called parthenogenesis. They also have an interesting way of defending themselves from predators: they release a chemical that smells like rotting meat when threatened.

The Orchid Ant is a unique insect that is native to Thailand, and it has been nicknamed the “midwife ant” because of its habit of helping orchid seeds to germinate by collecting and dispersing them.

This ant feeds on nectar and pollen from orchids, which are native to Thailand. The orchid grows in a symbiotic relationship with the ants: The plant provides shelter for the ants, in the form of hollowed out plant stems; in return, the ants protect the orchids from being eaten by other insects.

This type of behavior is known as mutualism: It benefits both species involved by supporting one another’s survival.
