Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental cockroaches are black in color and are slightly larger than German Cockroaches. They are similar to German Cockroaches, in that they are nocturnal, thus causing mischief mostly at night when it’s quiet. Oriental cockroaches can survive up to one year without food or up to two months without water. This is a strong adaptation that makes them particularly good at surviving indoors. The oriental cockroach is one of the most common and troublesome household pest insects in urban and suburban areas. Apartment dwellers find them to be especially difficult because they are “crepuscular” (active at dusk) and secretive. But oriental roaches aren’t just a problem in apartment buildings. Even those who think they never see any insects in their homes actually have a fair number of these sometimes very large roaches living just beyond the range of their lights at night.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental Cockroaches are unique in the fact that they are not only the most common cockroach in North America, but they also have a special ability to hide in small spaces. These cockroaches can squeeze themselves into cracks and crevices much smaller than other species of roach, which makes them difficult to exterminate.

The Oriental cockroach (Blattodea: Blattellidae) is a common species of cockroach, and is one of the most widely distributed in the world. It is found throughout the United States, where it can be found in both urban and rural areas. It has also been reported to occur in Australia and other regions of the Pacific Rim, including Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Oriental cockroach is a small species, measuring 2 to 4 cm long when fully grown. They are reddish brown in color with yellowish legs. They have two dark longitudinal stripes running down their back, with a lighter stripe between them. Their wings are short and held flat over their body when at rest. Their antennae are longer than their body length and have several segments that look like little balls atop them.

Oriental cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers that feed on both human food waste as well as decaying plant matter such as dead leaves or compost piles. They will also eat other insects such as flies if needed for survival during times of famine or food shortage within their environment
