Carpenter ants get their name from the fact that they excavate wood as a way to make their nests. They are less likely to chew through wood in your home than other types of ants because they prefer softer wood, such as that found in tree trunks. In contrast, carpenter ants are more likely to chew through the lower portions of exterior walls and foundations, which can cause structural damage if left unchecked. These insects don’t eat wood themselves; instead, they use it for shelter and nesting purposes.

Carpenter ants have large heads with thick jaws and long antennae. They are typically black or brownish-red in color with yellow markings on their bodies. Carpenter ants also have six legs like other types of ants, but they’re larger than most ants with bodies measuring between 0.5 inches (1 cm) long when fully grown. This makes them easy to identify by sight alone!
