Peach tree ants, Pseudomyrmex peachtree, are a species of small New World ants that has evolved become dependent on feeding from sap exuding from peaches and other fruits such as persimmons. In the southeastern United States, they are known to nest in living peach trees through the winter and are a pest in some areas because they do not cause damage to trees but can cause staining or dripping of sap onto cars, windows, pedestrians and buildings below. The peach tree ant can be a very problematic pest. This particular species of ant likes to go after the sweet nectar that exists in the peaches and other sweet fruits that are grown during the Spring season. A person could potentially wind up with some peach tree ants moving into his or her house if they actually cultivate their own peaches which grow during this period. This is because it is near impossible to keep them from coming over inside as they search for food.
Peach Tree Ants
Peaches are a delicious fruit that is loved by many. However, did you know that there is an ant that loves peaches too?
The peach tree ant (Paratrechina longicornis) is a species of ant that lives in the United States and Canada. They love to live in the soil around peach trees, but they also inhabit other plants like blackberries and blueberries. They are known for their nesting habits, which can be found in soil near peach trees.
The peach tree ant is a small black ant with red legs, antennae and jaws. The queen of this species has a yellow head and brown body while males have a more orange coloration. They prefer to live in moist soil where they can dig tunnels under tree roots or around rocks to create nests for themselves and their young ones as well as food stores for later use when food becomes scarce during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing temperatures outside along with snow cover on ground surface areas surrounding trees where ants live during winter months each year until spring arrives again next year when temperatures rise back up again above freezing point levels again so ants can emerge from underground tunnels once again onto surface.
The peach tree ant, a native of Southeast Asia, is one of the most unique species in the world.
It’s not just because it looks like an ant. It’s also because peach tree ants have four eyes instead of two, and these eyes are located on their tarsi (feet). The peach tree ant can also be distinguished by its large mandibles, which are used for defense and for cutting fruit.
When it comes to behavior, peach tree ants live in colonies that consist of up to 80 queens and thousands of workers. These colonies are highly organized and are capable of making tunnels that are as wide as they are tall.
At nightfall, these ants will leave their nests in search of food or water; they return home before sunrise each morning.
Peach tree ants also communicate with each other using pheromones; however, they don’t make sounds like other insects do. They do use vibrations in order to send messages back and forth within their colony—these vibrations can be felt by humans if they stand close enough to an ant nest!
