Brown planthoppers are one of the most difficult insect pests to control. Brown planthoppers have a very wide host range, damaging more than 100 different plants in more than 44 families. Planthoppers damage plants by sucking plant sap and injecting toxins into leaf veins. In addition, they have an affinity for feeding on the underside of leaves, which is where they deposit white waxy fecal material that blankets leaf surfaces and interferes with photosynthesis. Young planthoppers overwinter in the egg stage, hatch in early spring, and then start feeding almost immediately. Planthopper populations often reach damaging levels by mid- to late May or early June in central Ohio, depending on weather and environmental conditions. Adult brown planthoppers are about 1/4 inch long with wings folded up into hard, brown shells on the sides of their bodies. They often feed so slowly that dust accumulates around them and on the undersides of their bodies. This can make them appear reddish-brown in color (on top). Adults have four spines at the rear end of their thorax, a light stripe down their back and a heart-shaped proboscis (tube-like mouthparts) similar to aphids.
Pesticide For Brown Planthopper
The brown planthopper is a tiny insect that is native to Asia and has been known to infest crops in the United States since 1963. They are about one millimeter long, and their color ranges from yellowish-brown to light green.
The brown planthopper can feed on over 100 different crop plants, including cotton, soybeans, rice, wheat, corn, beans, strawberries and more. They are not picky eaters!
The Brown Planthopper (BPH) is a serious threat to the health and well-being of rice crops. It has been found in almost all rice-growing countries.
This pest threatens agricultural productivity and food security by reducing rice yield and quality, leading to an increase in cost of production and reduced income for farmers.
It also spreads diseases such as Rice Bacterial Blight (RBB), which can reduce grain yield by up to 50%.
To fight BPH, farmers use chemical pesticides such as Methyl Parathion, Dimethoate, Fipronil and Imidacloprid. These insecticides are harmful to both humans and the environment, but they are often used because they are cheap and easy to find in local markets.
Pesticides for Brown Planthopper control
There are several pesticides available for controlling this pest. Some of these include:
Pyrethroid insecticides such as permethrin and bifenthrin; organophosphates such as chlorpyrifos; carbamates such as aldicarb; neonicotinoids such as acetamiprid; and biologicals such as entomopathogenic fungi (specifically Beauveria bassiana).
