The Common Bed Bug (C. lectularius) is a small parasitic insect that feeds on the blood of warm-blooded animals. Its name comes from its preferred habitat of warm houses, particularly near sleeping humans in their beds. Bed bugs are not known to transmit any pathogens as disease agents to humans. Adult bed bugs have flat bodies about the size and shape of an apple seed which enables them to fit into tiny spaces and cracks in rooms, woodwork, clothing and furniture. Bedbugs are a hardy breed, resilient to temperatures ranging from 32-113 degrees Fahrenheit. Bedbugs can live on some surfaces for up to 18 months without feeding. While they cannot fly or jump, they can crawl very quickly and will readily hide in any dark crevice or hole close by in which to lay eggs and procreate.
Picture Of Bed Bug Life Cycle
The bed bug life cycle is a complex process that can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to complete.
The first stage of the bed bug life cycle is known as the egg stage, or instar. Eggs are laid on or near where people sleep, and they are usually no larger than 0.5mm in diameter.
The second stage is known as the nymphal stage, which lasts for about two weeks when it comes to bed bugs. During this time, they will molt several times until they reach maturity (this is also referred to as “blood-feeding”).
The third and final stage of the bed bug life cycle is called the adult stage. In this phase, bed bugs are fully grown and capable of reproducing if conditions are right for them.
The bed bug life cycle is a complex process that begins with an egg and ends with an adult bed bug.
As soon as the female bed bug lays her eggs, they begin to hatch. The first stage of the bed bug life cycle is called a nymph, and it looks like a smaller version of the adult bed bug. Nymphs go through 5 molting stages before they reach adulthood, which can take up to 18 months. This means that there are many different stages during which you could detect an infestation and take action against it.
Once the nymph reaches adulthood, it starts looking for food and mates—and it’s not picky about which one comes first!
The bed bug life cycle is unique in that it includes a reproductive phase known as “the parabiotic phase.” During this stage, the male and female bed bugs exist in close proximity to each other. The male will feed on the female until she is ready to lay her eggs, at which point he will die.
The female then lays her eggs in a crevice or seam of the mattress or box spring, and they will hatch after three weeks. The nymphs will then feed on blood until they reach adulthood after another five weeks.
