There’s a lot of ant species in this world, but most of us have never even seen one because they stay out of sight. Velvet ants are one of the few kinds of ants that are actually easy to find! Their name comes from the soft, fuzzy hair covering their bodies. Unlike most ants, they don’t bite, and they’re bright orange or red instead of black. This makes them easier to spot as well! Velvet ants are a fairly diverse group of ants with over 350 species, occurring mainly in the Neotropics and tropical Australia. Most, but not all, species of velvet ants are wingless, and have a flattened body with long legs. This gives them a superficial resemblance to some insects in the family Reduviidae. However, they are different from these beetles because their antennae are much longer than their head and pronotum combined. Velvet ants were first included in the formicidae, but were found to be sufficiently distinct to warrant their own family: Mutillidae.
