Systemic Insecticide For Boxwood Leafminer

| |

Boxwood leafminer is a common pest of boxwoods (Buxus spp.), an evergreen shrub that is popular as hedges, borders, and specimen plants. Boxwood leafminer damages agricultural crops and ornamentals by feeding on the leaves of these plants. This pest causes extensive damage to ornamental boxwoods by feeding through the top surface of leaves, leaving brown patches and silvery trails on foliage; this produces a mottled appearance or streaking patterned effect. The larval stages feed under the leaf surface producing fine webbing between veins that prevent the proper gas exchange from taking place within individual leaves thereby causing premature leaf drop in affected plants.

The boxwood leafminer is a small moth that lays its eggs on boxwood leaves, which are then eaten by the larvae. The larvae cause damage to boxwood leaves. They are not visible to the naked eye and must be removed for treatment.

Which insecticide is best for leaf miners?

The systemic insecticide diflubenzuron (Micromite) has been shown to be effective primarily against eggs and larvae. The translaminar insecticide cyantraniliprole can be used as a foliar spray where citrus leafminer is present on host trees, but not as a dormant spray.

The contact insecticides acephate and imidacloprid are also useful but are less effective than the systemic products for controlling citrus leafminer.

How do I get rid of the leafminer?

The best way to get rid of leafminer is by crushing the larvae in their trails with your fingers. This can be time-consuming and difficult to do, especially if you have a large infestation. Neem oil, Bt spray, and spinosad sprays are also effective at killing this insect pest on boxwood trees (Buxus spp.). Beneficial insects such as beneficial nematodes and parasitic wasps are also useful for controlling leafminer populations. Prevention methods such as lures, sticky traps, or floating row covers are also highly effective when used in conjunction with other control methods.

How do I get rid of the boxwood leafminer?

To keep the leafminer in check, prune boxwood back by about 1/3rd to remove the stems with infested leaves, which will help reduce this pest. Dispose of the clippings. This should eliminate the need to use an insecticide. It is difficult to control adult leafminers because of their short adult life stage.
