When I discovered the best natural insect repellent for babies, it changed my life. I wouldn’t joke about something so serious. Before trying our environmentally friendly formulation, the only way to prevent chiggers and bed bugs was with potentially harmful chemicals that may harm your child. This would always leave me feeling guilty no matter how many times I sprayed them on her. And to make matters worse, she always seemed to like the smell! These chemicals can be especially dangerous if you’re spraying them in an unventilated room or near your face or eyes. Trust me, it’s not a pretty picture. The good news is that you can now find an effective alternative that provides safe protection from insects while also being cruelty-free, vegan and vegetarian friendly! Insects can be a huge problem especially if you’re not out of the house much and your child is. Because we’re spending more time at home during summer, it’s easy to apply insect repellent more frequently to our kids. But are you using the right insect repellent? A lot of insect repellents contain chemicals which aren’t safe for babies. That’s why I’ve done extensive research and found only the best baby safe insect repellents.

Baby Safe Insect Repellent
I live on a lake and in the summer, my children are often bitten by mosquitos.
I live on a lake and in the summer, my children are often bitten by mosquitos. Mosquitos can be a nuisance. They can also spread many diseases, including West Nile virus and malaria. The most dangerous animal in the world is likely the mosquito, which kills more people each year than any other animal -– even lions! So as you can see, it’s important to protect yourself from these pests wherever you go.
I believe that DEET is not healthy for me or my babies, especially when it is a chemical that is absorbed by their skin.
I believe that DEET is not healthy for me or my babies, especially when it is a chemical that is absorbed by their skin. While the effectiveness of DEET can’t be denied, the fact remains that it’s a toxic chemical. When used as directed on the label of products containing DEET, no harm should result. But there are plenty of reasons to avoid this product:
- It can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people
- It can also cause central nervous system problems such as headaches and seizures in some people
- As an oil-based ingredient, it’s not good for the environment
When I have used homemade insect repellents in the past, they have included essential oils. Aromatic plant essential oils consist of complex combinations of many different molecules including terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, and phenols. Many botanicals have been investigated for their mosquito repellent abilities.

For example, citronella oil has been shown to repel mosquitoes (Kumarnsit et al., 2012; Borrelia et al., 2014; Vatansever et al., 2015). In particular, it is found to repel mosquitoes from human skin (Aung et al., 2017). This is likely due to its high content of geraniol, an effective mosquito repellent component (Arbabi & Rajaei-Shahvari 2016). Rosemary oil has also been found to repel mosquitoes as well as other insects such as cockroaches and flies (Hosseinzadeh & Shahverdian 2011). Further research has shown that rosemary oil can also reduce sweat when applied topically which may explain why it helps keep away bugs (Dassouki et al., 2010).
I decided to try making an insect repellent to use on my children this summer.
One thing you can do to help your kids is to make a homemade insect repellent that is safe for children. It’s easy to make and inexpensive. You can decide what kind of ingredients you want to use, and you can even try different scents.
It’s important to note that there are many benefits over commercial products:
- You have more control over the ingredients used in your product, including those that may not be safe for infants or children who have allergies.
- The cost will be significantly less than what you would pay at the store, especially if you purchase bulk supplies when they’re on sale! This also means no chemicals being sprayed directly onto skin (which shouldn’t happen anyway).
By adding 1 cup of the mixture to the hot water bath and letting the mixture infuse into the hot water for about 20 minutes before starting to decant the liquid through a coffee filter or piece of cheese cloth (something that will fit over top of your jar). You may need to use multiple coffee filters or cheese cloths if you are using cheese cloth as it is likely that it will let all of the particles through into your infusion.

At 40% concentration this product should be effective for about 2 hours.
At 40% concentration, this product will last for about 2 hours. Other compounds may have different longevity and absorption rates depending on the specific chemical makeup of the product. For example, citronella oil has a lower evaporation rate than catnip oil, so it could last longer than the 40% concentration of our repellent. In addition, other compounds such as peppermint oil have even lower evaporation rates and may offer even shorter protection time (1-2 hours).
Some compounds like citronella oil may last several hours longer than others such as catnip oil.
Some compounds like citronella oil may last several hours longer than others such as catnip oil. It is important to note that the concentration of essential oils does not matter, but rather their presence or absence in your formula. DEET is effective for about 2 hours on most people and some botanical repellents can last up to 8 hours if you are using a high quality product with very little alcohol and water in it.
I will be using this next time we go swimming at the lake!
- Don’t use this on children under 2 months of age.
- Don’t use it on broken skin.
- Don’t use it on your hands before eating.
- Don’t get it in your eyes, around your eyes, or on your lips.
