Monster Ants

As a kid, every summer I would go to visit my grandparents in Mississippi. While my mom and sisters enjoyed being outside, my grandfather and I would stay inside and play board games. One of our favorite games was Monster Ants or MegaDemon..something like that. I don’t think the name matters much but what does matter is that the game was a team game where one person was the ant queen (I was usually her) and the others were individual ants who tried to get food for their queen. We used pennies, nickels and dimes to move around the playing board until we found food – then we raced to bring it back to feed our baby ant babies. When we returned with the food, we moved some more until we found more food.          The reason why I am telling you about this silly childhood game is because today at work, I made my business partners race each other trying to bring me bugs so I could have lunch.

Today we are going to discuss the monster ant. It is a fierce insect that can bite and sting to defend itself. The Monster Ant has large jaws that enable it to crack into hard nuts and seeds. In fact, when you meet one, you will notice how big its head is compared to its body. This characteristic helps it carry heavy food items.

A friend came over to my house and told me her toddler had been bitten by what the little girl called a “monster ant”. My friend had freed the child after the monstrous insect had sunk it’s mandibles into the toddler’s leg, and was sure this was an aggressive new species of fire ants. But no sooner had I grabbed a kitchen knife to start hacking into the bark on the tree outside (knowing that juvenile fire ants would probably be crawling around) then she showed me the bug.

There are a lot of different types of ants familiar to just about everybody. Their existence on our planet can be traced back over a hundred million years and they play a critical role in every ecosystem on earth. It would be good for us to know as much about them as we can as we’re dealing with them on a daily basis, even if indirectly.

I have an interesting story to tell you. So sit back and relax, because this should be a wild ride. It all started when I decided to turn my backyard into a vegetable garden. I thought it would be easy enough because growing vegetables could be done by anybody.
