The ant colony must contain a queen because if it did not there would be no way for new ants to be born and an ant colony would die out soon. The queen lays eggs that hatch into larvae which then molt into pupae and finally emerge as adults ready to work hard at finding food and reproducing more worker ants so they can keep expanding their territory in search of food sources.
