Bed bugs can be a nightmare, but there are ways to get rid of them. When you’re done with the bed bug treatment, it’s important that you keep up with some maintenance and care to make sure they don’t come back. Here are some tips for keeping your home bed bug-free:

Inspections

To ensure that your home is truly bed bug free, it is important to inspect not only the rooms where an infestation was found, but also other rooms in the house. A thorough inspection should include checking all beds, bed frames, mattresses and box springs for signs of bed bug activity (fecal stains), as well as clothes stored with these items. This will help ensure that if any insects are present they can be identified and treated quickly. In addition it is important to check the baseboards around all walls where you think there may be a potential hiding place for bugs; this includes curtains and carpets as well as furniture like book shelves or computer desks. It is also a good idea to look into electrical outlets since these areas tend not get cleaned frequently enough when compared with other parts of our homes meaning they could easily become infested by these pests without us even realizing what has happened until much later down the line!

Empty the drawers and cabinets.

  • Empty the drawers and cabinets.
  • Wash clothing in hot water, and dry on high heat.

Wash all the linens, towels and clothes with hot water.

After you have washed all the linens, towels, and clothes with hot water, use them to dry them in the sun. If that is not possible then dry them in a tumble dryer on high heat for at least 20 minutes.

Use a commercial laundry detergent that has an insecticidal action to kill any remaining bed bugs. If you are washing a large number of items, you can use a commercial washing machine as well but make sure to read the labels carefully before using it on your items as most machines do not allow you to add chlorine bleach when doing so may damage some fabrics and colors!

Vacuum shelves and the inside of cabinets.

Vacuum shelves and the inside of cabinets.

Using a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment and HEPA filter, vacuum all surfaces, including crevices and cracks where bed bugs like to hide. Throw away the vacuum cleaner bag after you have finished. You can also use a brush attachment to clean hard-to-reach places or nooks and crannies.

Seal infested items in plastic bags.

Once you’ve taken care of the bed bug infestation, it’s important to make sure that they don’t come back. To do this, seal all of your bedding and other items that have come into contact with bed bugs (including clothes) in plastic bags and put them in an outside bin or trash container. Make sure that when you take these items out again at night or on the weekends, they’re not near other items that could be infested by bed bugs.

To prevent new infestations from happening, you should wash all clothing as soon as possible after using it. This will remove any eggs that may be clinging to it and prevent further spread of the problem.

Throw away items that are not salvageable.

Items that cannot be washed or dried:

  • Carpets and rugs (except hardwood floors)
  • Furniture, mattresses, box springs and bed frames (both wooden and metal)
  • Fabric-covered couch cushions, chair seats and backs

Items that are not sealed in plastic bags:

  • Bookshelves, night tables, end tables and cabinets with open shelves or drawers—if you can move them yourself; otherwise hire a professional pest control service to dispose of them for you.

If there’s any chance that pests remain in your home after treatment (for example if the treatment didn’t work), it is critical to seal up these items until we can confirm all pests have been eliminated from the home. This means putting them into sealed plastic bags for at least two weeks after treatment has been completed. If you want to keep using bookshelves/nightstands/cabinets with open drawers as storage space after treatment because they are too large or heavy to bring outside right now but don’t yet have enough time to seal everything off properly by sealing off all openings into those wood surfaces with clear tape or save any other way possible then just make sure they aren’t accessible while still being able nearby so they can be treated quickly once you’ve got enough time later on down the line!

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on blood. They’re typically found in places where people sleep, such as beds and couches. Though they can be difficult to see, these pests leave behind red, itchy bites that look like welts or mosquito bites. A single bed bug may not cause much harm, but their presence is often an indication of an infestation—and the more bugs you have, the more likely it is that their bites will make you sick.
