If you keep finding what appears to be Bed Bug Poop during your inspections you might have found a Bed Bug Egg Cluster. If you look closely, there are actually multiple Bed Bug Eggs in this cluster – it’s a little hard to see. What is an egg cluster? An egg cluster is basically a group of bed bug eggs bound together with a great deal of blood. You may not find them until much later in the infestation when they are time bombs waiting to hatch. Bed bug egg clusters are a sign that you have recently been infested with bed bugs. Bed bugs start laying eggs from the moment they find a food source. A female bed bug will lay 3-4 eggs per day and up to 513 in its lifetime if it is not killed. If you think you have seen bed bug eggs on your bed or other flat surfaces, it’s important that you take action immediately. Even if there are only a few eggs, the risk of their numbers growing is very real.

Bed bugs have a 4-6 month life cycle, but can live up to one year without feeding. A female bed bug lays around 200 eggs throughout her lifetime. Bed bugs are not a result of poor hygiene and can live in even the cleanest homes.

Signs of Bed Bugs

If you think you have bed bugs, take a look around your home. If you find evidence of bed bugs in the following places, it’s time to call the exterminator.

• Bed Bedding: Look for live or dead bedbugs and their eggs in the seams of mattresses and box springs, behind headboards, under rugs and furniture legs.
• Other Areas: Check for fecal stains (dark spots) on walls or baseboards that look like black soil or dirt; check for small reddish-brown spots of dried blood from crushed bug carcasses; check also under loose wallpaper or carpet overlays where they may be hiding during daylight hours. They tend to hide during daytime hours but will come out at night when it’s warm enough for them to feed again after sitting motionless beneath items such as carpets and rugs until dark when they will go back into hiding so inspect these areas carefully as well as areas where there are many crevices between floor boards where they could be hiding such as behind skirting boards etcetera

Bed Bug Eggs vs. Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetle eggs are also oval but can be up to 2mm long and are rounded at one end.

Bed bug nymphs have six legs, no wings and a clear sheath that covers their abdomen when they molt. The larvae have eight legs and a similar transparent sheath as the nymphs. Carpet beetle larvae have four or five pairs of jointed legs with bristly tufts of hair at the end of each leg segment; some species may have fewer than four pairs of legs.
