Imagine a cockroach so huge that it could run across the front of your screen and make other cockroaches in the far distance scamper away. It’s massive, it’s scary and—yikes—it looks just like a cockroach. What you’re imagining is a Macrocheles ranavalonis, the largest cockroach in the world. They’re black, they have wings, and their shape is quite similar to that of a cockroach. However, they’re not what you think they are at all.
These creatures — also known as: Eyed Elaters, Spring Tails, and Inch Bugs — are veliid planthoppers (aka “inch bugs”), insects in the family Fulgoridae; so why would anyone want to call them cockroaches? Mostly because people think they look like them. Have you ever looked at a bug on your wall and wondered if that bug had a long tail and large wings, would it look exactly like cockroach? What if I told you that it wasn’t only one bug that looks like a cockroach but many? You don’t have to take my word for it.
What bugs can be mistaken for roaches?
If you see a bug in your house, you might think it’s a cockroach. But there are other types of insects that look like roaches. Here are some of them:
Crickets. Crickets are approximately the size of cockroaches, but their coloring is much darker, with many appearing all black. They have shorter antennae and legs than roaches, and they don’t fly. The most notable difference between crickets and roaches is that crickets produce chirping noises by rubbing their wings together.
Giant Water Bugs. These insects are larger than cockroaches and have wings that are longer than their bodies. Giant water bugs have long legs with spiny tips on them; they also have long antennae that curve up over their heads.
June Bugs/May Beetles. June bugs and may beetles look somewhat similar to roaches because they’re brown or black with yellow or white stripes on their wings—but they’re not as long as a cockroach’s body would be if it were stretched out straight (June bugs and may beetles can be 1″ long). They also don’t make noise like crickets do when they fly around your house at night.
What do Michigan roaches look like?
Michigan roaches come in a variety of colors, but the most common are tan or brown. They have two darker stripes running down their pronotal shields (backs).
Michigan roaches are about 1/2 inch long and can be seen running across your floor or kitchen countertop. They love warm, moist environments, so they often appear in bathrooms and kitchens.
German cockroaches are very fast runners, which makes them hard to spot unless you’re looking closely. If you see small brown or black bugs scurrying around in your kitchen or bathroom, it’s likely that they’re Michigan roaches.
How do you tell if a bug is a cockroach?
You can tell if a bug is a cockroach by looking at its antennae, legs, body shape and wings.
All cockroaches have a pair of long antennae and six long, spiny legs. The body is flattened back to front and oval-shaped. Most cockroaches in Canada have wings, but cannot fly long distances.
What types of cockroaches are in Michigan?
Michigan has four cockroaches that are common: the American Cockroach, the Oriental Cockroach, the German Cockroach and the Brown-banded Cockroach.
The American Cockroach is one of the largest and most common roaches in North America. It can grow up to 2 inches long, with a reddish-brown coloration on its antennae and body segments. It also has a yellowish-brown band on its head.
The Oriental Cockroach looks almost identical to an American cockroach, but it is smaller at only 1 inch long. It has a light brown body with reddish-brown wings, and it has two parallel lines running down its wings.
The German Cockroach is another type of large cockroach that is black in coloration with dark brown wings. It is also known as a water bug because of its ability to swim through water without drowning.
The Brown-banded Cockroach has a brown band around its head (hence its name), but otherwise looks like other types of cockroaches
Can cockroaches bite you?
If you’ve ever been startled by a cockroach crawling on you, then you know how it feels to be bitten by one. But can they really bite?
The answer is no. Roaches don’t have the right kind of mouthparts to pierce through human skin, and they don’t have sharp teeth that could inflict a bite. At most, cockroaches might seem like they’re biting a person when in fact they’re just trying to pick at food remnants or dead skin.
What instantly kills roaches?
The best way to kill roaches is with borax and sugar.
Borax is a natural mineral that, when mixed with white table sugar, creates an irresistible bait for roaches. Roaches eat the mixture and then move on to other activities. Unfortunately for them, after consuming borax, they begin to dry out and die.
To use this method effectively, combine equal parts borax and white table sugar in a bowl and dust the mixture in any place where you’ve seen roach activity. After the roaches consume it and are dead, discard them outside of your home so they don’t attract more bugs.
