A Question for the Ages! Is it possible for ants to poop? I think that question has puzzled mankind since the moment we first learned of ants existence. Some people think they can, some people think they can’t, but to be honest with you, I’m not here to answer that question. I can tell you one thing though – everyone is going to have an opinion on this subject. Ants can poop. That is, they have a colon and rectum in their bodies which enables them to digest whatever they consumed. The answer is yes! Ants are insects and, like all insects, have an exoskeleton (external skeleton). This means that the ants themselves don’t have any internal organs. So when you see ants crawling around, that’s not actually an ant—it’s just an exoskeleton.

The exoskeleton is made up of many tiny sections called sclerites which are connected by flexible membranes. These sclerites protect the ants from infection and other dangers. But there’s one problem: if these membranes were flexible enough to let the ant poop out its waste or pee, then all of those membranes would be weakened and eventually break apart, allowing bacteria and other pathogens into the ant’s body. So what do ants do?

Ants actually have two different types of glands that they use to excrete waste: Malpighian tubules and Dufour’s glands. These glands are located inside their abdomen but outside their true body cavity (where organs should be).
